Frac-rack Panels |
 |
|
Could anyone tell me where I get blank panels from, I assume they can be bought, or do I have to buy a sheet steel and cut it to size (I hope not you can have someones eye out with that stuff).
I hear frac-rack mentioned a lot but after a google search found nothing for buying blank panels..
please help..
Cheers

great stuf, found em on paia and they are still not a bad price, excellent.
thnx bugbrand
for my next trick I need to find out the cheapest way to get my panel designs on to the panels (I thought about screen printing, but that doesn't actually work out that cheap). |

I've looked into that, they seem a little too expensive, and I haven't quite got the hang of the software yet , I like to use photoshop for designing them, unless there is an import function..that would be nice. |

I bought some of these PAIA panels recently and the finish was horrible. The double wide ones were purple, the singles were black and they all had various gouges in them - neither side was usable IMO. They're also **WAY thicker than Blacet panels and look like crap in the same rack with the Blacet's IMO. They are heavier metal though if that's what you want.
Unfortunately the ones Blacet sells have a bunch of holes predrilled that you may or may not want. I wish he just sold plain anodized panels with mounting holes only.
I had some T6 aluminum cut at a local metal place for real cheap- 10 singles and 10 doubles for $15 US. There are other threads about how to deal with the panel fronts from there.
Cheers

thnx doctorvague, I think I may look locally and see about getting some cut (i just don't fancy cutting it myself)
and I will look through the forum for some ideas on putting my layout onto the panels.
I would like to use schaeffer, but I find designing the panels much easier in photoshop, though going back to my earlier comment about them been too expensive, I think by the time I've spent momey on what ever method I use to make the panels, I bet I'm not far off that cost anyway so I might try and get my head round the Front panel designer and see what happens.
ps drv I've just watched your video on your for the DIY peoples post...

there are three kind of things who make schaeffer panels expensive: color in-fill of the engravings, graphics (lines, squares and such) and text objects. so here are three ideas how to lower cost:
1) use black anodized panels (which you will probably do anyway because of frac rack) and don't in-fill the engravings - that will decrease the cost dramatically
2) use hpgl for scales, symbols, logos and all more versatile graphics stuff
3) use text in columns: if you have designators in columns don't create a text object for each. create one text object and use paragraph breaks (adjust line space according to your grid and font size).
BTW on the edit/settings/general tab you can set the editor to the inch-system which would be helpful for frac rack (at blacet.com you will find the measurements for frac rack panels) _________________

hpgl is an old hewlett packard plotter command file format. it was designed for these old pencil plotters and tell the plotter when to move where... so it's ideal for engraving machines too. photoshop may have an export filter? you will be able to export lines only... so a filled plain will have to consist of multple lines in parallel (corel draw provides tools to do that for you, i don't know about photoshop). _________________

cheers again..
I'll look into hpgl and photoshop (i'm sure there will be something out there somewhere)
Also I suppose if I don't fill in the engraving I suppose I could paint it myself (my look tacky, but I suppose I'll find that out with trial and error) |

Looks good dr. I'll have to take your advice going to a machine shop. In my first attempts I've been using plexiglass, as there is a huge box at work at my disposal, but when it's gone. Diggin your quote, I just can't quite get enough of Don. _________________ "your stripes are killer bro" |

I've been using ID-Mark for about a year now and I absolutely love the stuff. I initially bought it just to do panels for my modular, but I've been using it for guitar pedals and other electronics projects with excellent results.
Here's my latest ID-Mark creation (a MIDI-sync device for LSDJ)

Photoshop is raster-based (bitmapped images); HPGL is vector-based... pretty much, never the twain shall meet.
i use a drawing program (freehand or illustrator) to lay out most of my panels, print to paper and then spray mount them to drilled panels, w/ either plastic laminate or sprayed clearcoat on top to protect them. functional cheap and fast.
recently i've done a few more FPD panels... following Fonik's suggestions helps keep the cost down somewhat... biggest drawback for me is the turnaround time... i like instant gratification. plus, i always seem to make one little mistake.
pictures, and some sample FPD files, here

the ID Mark looks pretty cool, but it just looks they do letters, so I guess you couldn't do the dials???
I also like bbobs idea.
I've got a lot of good ideas from this post, thanks guys.. |

Here's the site I would definitely have a look at:
http://www.sdiy.org/xyzzy/panels/
It appears you can certainly do any graphics you want with ID-Mark including ticks, etc depending on things like printer resolution and print quality of course.
See the above note about Raster vs vector above e.g. Photoshop vs Illustrator also.
