Thanks Bruce. Sounds like you've explored most of the nooks and crannies, which is where the really unique sounds are.

I know this is really old thread, but I wanted to just update it a bit by linking to some new videos I recently put up. Two are drone sounds using the 5Pulser alone and one illustrates using the 5Pulser and Analog XOR together. SSL is releasing a module with a 5-Pulser and a dual Analog XOR. Final testing will be this week!

Nowt wrong with resurrecting this thread Ian! I'm in awe of your circuit here and have been since 2007!!! _________________ ACHTUNG!

Nice drone too in that video.
I was listening to a cornet ensemble the other day thinking that what essentially is 4 square-wave-ish sounds, there was so much movement in the reed sound, which made the instrument 'come alive' so to speak. Many analogue synthesisers produced today lack this movement, and the sound gets very hard on the ears after a while. The 5Pulser really puts a lot of 'human-ness' back into the sound? _________________ ACHTUNG!

Certainly with such a wide range of timbres available from the 5Pulser there's plenty of scope for interesting movement in the sound. In an acoustic ensemble most of the movement, I think, comes from slightly unsteady tones and imprecise tuning, which make a kind of variable beating. I've been interested lately whether similar movement (animation) can be got from a single oscillator with lots of phase-shifty modulation. So in my videos a lot the heavy lifting animation-wise comes from the six LFOs.

I definitely think a single oscillator with animation is worth exploring. I've always preferred the sound of single oscillator instruments. The current glut of commercially available monosynths hitting the market right now all suffer from the same thing that they all sound like one another. Even the ones with interesting filters, essentially still sound the same. There's no movement in the oscillators. And having two oscillators gently beating against each other, or ones with PWM to thicken the sound, still sounds rather dry and lifeless. If an acoustic single monophonic device can sound so expressive, I don't see why an electronic one can't either?
An LFO too also suffers from this, with it's usual range of sine, tri, square etc.
I will of course watch with interest anything you may come up with!

hi there Ian
first of all thanks for putting this circuit up here it sounds very interesting.
im ordering parts so i try this out and make it on a veroboard like all of my modules.
i was looking at the schematic and noticed the -5v in the upper left and down in the corner,
are you getting these -5 volts from a seperate power supply or did you install a regulator like 7905 on your 5pulser pcb´s ?
also are the d2-5 just any Zener 5.1V diodes ?
ps i just finished one of your AD/AR envelope as part of a
retriggerable LFO,VCA Envelope Module,
it´s very cool i really like it,
im going to be making more of your envelopes.

Thanks for your interest. Glad to see there are still a few folks around willing to put in the effort to make scratch builds.

The 5.2 V Zener D3 is the -5 V supply. ie, just connect the two circles together.

D3-5 are any 5.1 V Zener. The little ones are fine.
