The next version of Microsoft® Windows®, codenamed "Longhorn," includes exciting new features to support additional devices and enhance the operation of existing device types. In addition, Microsoft is working to streamline and simplify the driver development process for developers and manufacturers.

Longhorn Tastes the Apple
the first day of WinHEC 2004 (the Windows Hardware Engineering Conference) in Seattle had, as expected, a major track on Longhorn. It focused on the new user interface and what Microsoft is planning for its next-generation operating system. A big part of it could be summed up in a word: 3D.

PC Magazine reporter Richard Fisco finds Longhorn to have "an Apple look to it… After looking at some images and icons that grew bigger or flipped when chosen, I couldn't help but think of the dock on Apple's OS X."

I hope MS has the good sense to enable one to turn off all that flashy stuff. Apple and MS need to understand the window managers ard operating systems are not the same thing. Linux can run with many different window managers. |

i agree with that
i had to find a third-party utility to turn off 'font smoothing; in OS X which slows things down considerably....
i want the ability to strip a gui down to the basics _________________ Spiral Recordings |

not yet. my gear situation is pitiful but I'll have a test machine in the next couple of weeks. I'd like to use that kernel as the basis for an audio OS. basicallly, one very large and extensible audio program that runs by itself so that there's less abstraction of the hardware. speed speed speed. Some people have been doing this with other applications using the Flux OSkit. |

Well, well, well - so you are into hardcore computing technology. That's great! Let us know how it works out.
I used to be very adventureous in OS stuff, but lately I'm just trying to learn Flass That's enough for me right now. Oh, and Mr. Elektro80 has me on an OSX Server course too. |

u might be interested in the OSkit. sort of takes the drudgery out of os development. yeah, I'm particularly interested in micro/exo-kernel's. It seems to me that things could be much faster if OS's made effective use of the hardware.
what's flass? tried googling it but all I got was "Peter Flass" ::) |
