Antimon,

Code:
SndBuf sndBufs[nSamples][nVoices];
Envelope envs[nSamples][nVoices];

is starting 8*7 *2 Ugens which probably has something to do with the CPU usage. I'd take some LiSa's there, which I suspect would greatly reduce the CPU usage and you'd only lose some versatility on what you can do with envelopes..

Yes, you're right of course. Not chucking all 8*7 envelopes to dac at startup, and unchucking those that aren't used might also help - though ChucK maybe optimises handling of finished SndBufs.

Since I did the cli sequencer on my last vacation a year ago, now might be a good time to spend this year's vacation fixing these things. sunny

I think anything connected to the sample-suckers will be polled at least, regardless of intra-Ugen optimisations. While Ugens are cheap compared to the equivalent in code (assuming sample-rate loops) they do add up. UnChucKing unused ADSR's will help, yes, but then again LiSa already has voice-cycling build in as well. I'm not sure exactly how those will compare.
