Subject description: For DAW software (FL Studio with VSTi plugins)

I've recently realized that my setup sucks really bad.(

Alesis micron
+
SP-404
+
MC-303 (sequencing))

so I've decided I want to go all software. It will be so much more convenient and I find when I use software I can come up with new songs in only a couple hours, sometimes multiple per day.

So I need some ideas of what I should and shouldn't get.

I'll clarify what I already read, correct me if I'm wrong:

AMD CPUs are better than Intel.
I need at least 2 gigs of RAM
And shared memory is NO GOOD

I know I need a good sound card too, no idea on that matter. My budget will be around 500 - 600 dollars max.

Guide me (if you want) heh.

What wrong with the computer you're typing on now?

To start you could probably pretty easily run your equipment into a USB Audio Interface that'll have some DAW bundld with it.

It's not a bad start and will keep your budget in check.

buy an audio interface... built-in sound cards aren't good.

http://www.tweakheadz.com/audio_interface_usb2_comparison_chart.htm

for the cpu, google benchmarks and compare them...

I got my hp centrino duo, 2 gigs ram, vista (vista sucks, avoid it if you can), 160 rom... for 600USD (with mail rebate)... I got it for Christmas, so I'm sure you can get something good for 600usd.

hope it helps Smile

For the price range you are looking at, most likely your video device will share some of that memory so that may be hard to avoid. Thats not necessarily a bad thing. Generally, the AMD based laptops will be cheaper but don't close the door to Intel processors. Look at many of the user groups for feedback on any particular computer you may be looking at as some may have some real quirks. For example, my Toshiba Satellite A75 ended up having over heating problems and a high degree of sensitivity to ESD charge build up on the body. The slights amount would lock the computer up.

For sequencing live, I would try Ableton LIVE for you rig. Yes, a USB or Firewire audio interface will be required as the ASIO drivers that come with them are "closer" to the hardware and thus are less likely to have latency problems.

Hope some of this helps Very Happy

Bill
