I have posted a how to at my website.

Do you have a computer that is located in a different space than you work? Then you may want to create a remote power switch.

I realize that I am new to making electronic things, and that for many here, they will find the quality unacceptable. I used a cardboard box, hot-glue, etc. Feel free to do a better job.

Uh... I might be wrong, but you are actually routing this the way it seems.. ?You have simply moved the power switch out of the box..with an extension cord of sorts? It is the mains you have rerouted by the way of a headphones TRS jack and cable?

Shocked

I think I´d personally would have chosen a low voltage/ low current solution by means of a relay based switch instead.

It would be shocking indeed if the power switch were a /power/ switch ... but it's not (on a modern PC) ... it's just a low power input really "requesting" the computer to do something ... like to turn itself off, or to go to sleep. Or even to do nothing at all I guess.

Lol, I see what you thought.

I am new to this but I would have NEVER run 60hz 120vrms through such dinky wires, have exposed connections and components that are not rated at big amps. If those wires were mains, I would have nearly killed myself, or plain killed myself, lol.

E80 - You're right, a relay would be a much better idea in that situation.

I know, but some PCs have both.. and this seemed to me to be the mains switch and not the MB powerup relay switch.

My solution would be a bit more simple I think.
You can buy remote powerswitches to switch lights of and on.
That would be all you need to switch your computer on and of but....
After having switched on my computer , I need my screen and mouse to go to the programm I want to run. How would you cope with that ?
Interesting!!!!

Hmm, well yes, but you might find that turning the PC on that way will not turn it on ... it's the equivalent of plugging it into the mains .. better check first if that turns the machine on. Sometimes a PC can be modified such that it will turn on when the power is plugged in.

For windows to startup programs after the computer was turrned on automatically you could add a shortcut to such programs in the startup folder in the start menu. This will not work though when you need to log on to your computer with a password as the programs from the startup folder have to run on some user account. There are some registry tricks as well to start software, but I don't know any details for that by head.

You may want to look into a commercial remote control package such
as X10

This completely eliminates any wiring or risking your life, and is quite convenient. Other compnaies such as Leviton make remote systems, but are much more expensive.

X10 has been around a long time, and is cheap. Some of their modules dont last long if you use them a lot.

Look for the Firecracker- you can control X-10 modules via PC software!

One minor irritation with AC-line remote control is- if you happen to have a transmitter on one phase, and the reciever on the other phase, the remote signal won't be coupled, and the receiver won't turn on/off.
You have to buy and install a phase coupler to pass the signal across the two phases.

I lived in a townhouse complex once- and figured I was the only X-10 user in the area. One night, one of my neighbors and I were playing X-10 tag. They turned a module on, and I kept turning it off. I knew what was going on, but I don't think they understood. I could hear some mumbling thru the wall but not specific details. It was quite hilarious.

The module have code switches to specifically eliminate this kind of issue.

X-10 is also very usful for Halloween automation, etc. You can also dim/brighten lights via PWM very easily. Lots of fun.

Except that this usually does not work to turn a computer on .. see my previous post.

On older machines which don't have the fornt panel button controlled by the motherboard, this will work.
