The Noodle Album Subject description: Use your noodle! |
 |
|
EDIT: We decided to change this fun thing from a *contest* to an *album* to deemphasize any notion of "better" or "worse" and better serve the electro-music.com community. Whether or not we actually make an album from it remains to be seen, but let's have a good time regardless. - Les
Well, we all had a good time enjoying each other's music in the computer generated music contest, so I thought I'd do it again. This time the theme is noodles. This includes hardware synth noodles, lunettas, software synth noodles, ChucK programs, SuperCollider programs, and basically anything electro-music.com themed that one might call a "noodle".
And there is a prize once again! This morning I was awake but had little to do so I wove a nice 40 inch chainmaille necklace, pictured below. It is half-persian weave just like the bracelet that Stefan won in the previous contest. Note that I only have a few hours of time and a few dollars worth of bright aluminum rings invested in this prize, so don't worry I'm not going overboard. Plus being aluminum it's very light and will ship in a padded envelope internationally for cheap.
Now, there is some concern over "contests" because we don't want to become judges and critics, putting our work in a box and saying who is better and stuff like that. So the theme of this contest is "Oodles of Noodles" and we will vote for whoever best fits that description. The rules of the contest are as follows:
1. Any electro-music.com member can enter.
2. Your noodle can be hardware, software, or both.
3. Any electro-music.com member can vote.
4. Only one vote per voter.
5. You must document your noodle.
6. You must submit an audio sample of your noodle.
7. Let's focus on fun first and rules are meant to be broken, haha!
Regarding rule 5, I feel it would be most interesting for all of us if we shared some representation of our noodles so everyone can get a feel for what kind of effort went into your noodle. If you have a hardware synth, maybe take a picture of your synth wired up with your noodle. Or draw a block diagram, or write a text paragraph describing it. Software entrants may post source code or a screenshot of their noodle. Just describe it somehow to make it interesting.
Oh, and just like before there is no time frame on this, we'll accept entries as long as they come in regularly and hold the voting privately after probably a month or so, we'll see how it goes.
I will be entering my KNoW Wave generator, but I don't have a recent audio sample of it so I'll post later with my entry.
Good luck, and may the Oodliest Noodle win!

Nice! With seven rules and a prize maybe we'd better have an official noodle definition, at least for the purposes of this fun competition. |

I honestly don't know a definition of a noodle. I think it comes from the tangled mess of wires that you see on a synth panel when a noodle is playing. I say we use the loosest definition possible, whatever that may be. _________________ "Let's make noise for peace." - Kijjaz |

That's a 404, Jan...
Edit: after a few attempts it's no longer a 404!
I always thought a noodle was a self playing patch, as originated on modulars. So one possible definition could be a self playing single system, as in a single hardware synth or single (stand alone) program, ruling out e.g. a separate sequencer + synth or a DAW/sequencer + plugins(?)

To me it means self playing and not multi-tracked or edited. No post production beyond choosing an excerpt, putting fades on the ends and maybe normalizing the levels or doing other across the board processing like adding a little EQ or reverb. |

True indeed, so who is the noodliest one of all? Mirror mirror on the wall, is my music better than a pack of Ramen Noodles, and if so what flavor? Tell you what, music is awesome but I remember some hungry starving days in college when I survived on Ramen noodles, four or five packs for a dollar as I recall. Tough to beat that! Tnx, Jan!
This is the Elektor Formant I've been repairing and my DIY modular.
10 minutes of patching for this, my symphonic cocophany, "The Unfinished Noodle"
One pass, hands off just a bit of delay.
You KNOW you can do better - I'm just a Rookie.

Nice noodle RF, I'd call it the Oktoberfest noodle!
Here is my KNoW Wave contest entry. It contains guitar, drums, and saxophone instrumennts. The tune is from four randomly generated Boolean Sequencers. I have described the generator in a nearby thread so I won't repeat that, suffice to say it is No Wave like Mars or DNA groups from the 1980's. Enjoy!

Thank you Jan for such a fascinating noodle. Though you refuse to vote, you just might win! haha.
OK, based on Howard's advice I have thought up a new name for these contests, it is "albums". We will make an album with each of us contributing a noodle!
Now, there are hit albums and there are albums that exist only as mp3's shared among friends, and we'll probably be doing the latter, but who knows? Maybe these albums can sell on electro-music.com's store? I dunno, and I don't much care either, I just want to have fun sharing music.
So Use Your Noodle and make a noodle for the album! Cheers! _________________ "Let's make noise for peace." - Kijjaz |

I'm excited about this! Expect a noodle from me soon, likely interfacing the Lunetta with Plogue Bidule, triggering off some stuff, etc. etc.
Better everyone HEARS it.. I will document with photos and stuff, though.
Thanks for the fun contest/album idea Inventor. |

I'm working on a hardware noodle soon.
Actually a very simple sound mixer.
Only 8 input channels, eq, Aux Send / Return..
After wiring a bit, I might come up with something. |

this is a result of a lifetime of sometimes debilitating depression.. i find if I just love the things i love a little bit more, and show a little more appreciation to others, things are that much easier. Art in general and my art in specific is very important to me, and without a community there is no audience for my art, and no art to inspire me! Thanks for the comments, Inventor, you're the man.

I have quite a few modulars.
Hard to count each format as one synth.
Thanks for listening and the feedback. |

I would prefer that people post the mp3s of the noodles here. That makes it relatively easy to put up on the streaming radio.
They should be 128 kbs stereo. That is important.
When you post an attachment, please write something in the description field. That will show up on the radio.electro-music.com page when the track is playing. This important, too.
