has anyone implemented a Shepard Function (http://machines.hyperreal.org/manufacturers/Paia/images/shepard.txt) generator in arduino or similar? seems like a natural...

Not to let any air out of your balloon, but while I've not done this with an Arduino, I've done it with a Roland D-110. It is was a curiousity to listen to, but really underwhelming in the long run.

It was a psychoacoustic effect that made me go wow for a short moment and then on to other things.

Yes it sounds like the pitch of the "tone" rises forever - sorta - but if you listen to it long enough, you can pick out what is really happening and that realization causes the effect to melt down. At least it did for me.

yr probably right abt the constantly rising (or falling) tone being a one-trick pony... i was thinking abt the buchla barberpole modules, which i believe use shepard functions as CVs in more complex contexts...

Boss Phase Shifter PS-3 does the Barblepole effect. It's easy to modify every parameter for CV control...I really need to get around to modding mine.
