Hello, new here, and I have a problem with a NL1 |
 |
|
Hi,
I just got my first Nord Lead - finally, after all of these years.
Anyhow, I got a NL1 from a guy, used of course, and it sounds awesome. However, there is a problem. About 1/2 of the keys don't work! From the lowest C to the A above the next lowest C of the keyboard doesn't work - that entire range plays no sounds.
This is not the biggest problem in the world for me because I mainly use a MIDI controller to play all of synths - which works just fine with the NL.
However, do want to fix this problem.
Does anyone have any ideas of what might be causing this?
The guy I got it from swears that everything worked before he shipped it to me, and the box and packaging seemed okay. I really have no reason not to trust this guy, because everything else about our deal was totally cool.
Alright, thanks in advance, and I am looking forward to spending more time here. |

| I should mention (something I just thought of) that I am listening through headphones plugged into the headphone jack. Could this be the problem? Could the output of a certain range only be sent to a certain output? |

Take a look at http://electro-music.com/forum/post-211756.html#211756
After opening the synth try all flat cable connectors by opening and closing again. Try what happens.
The keyboard could be broken, so it has to be replaced. This is best done at a service sentre.

Thanks - I'll take a look.
Are different ranges of the keyboard wired separately? |

I'm not sure about the Nord keyboards, but I had the same problem with my Viscount OB-12. The OB-12 has rather poor ribbon connectors. Nord use much better quality parts though. The crimp-on ribbon connectors can sometimes have a loose fit the the wires within the ribbon, though this is very rare.
Has anyone serviced the mechanical section of nord keyboards? Are these Fatar? I have heard of a case with an old Ensoniq keyboard which a user took apart to clean, but some aspect of it required re-calibration after assembly. The keyboard was pretty much useless after that. Unless I know something about the keyboard action, I tend to leave this area alone. Your case does sound like a maintenance issue though, maybe with dirt or bad contacts.
Have you tried monitoring the MIDI output with something like MIDI-OX, while using these keys? I'm guessing you won't see anything, but it may be something to have a quick look at. From memory, your keyboard won't be sending any aftertouch, right?
Another thought, is there anything like a global keyboard split which may cause this?
Well, not sure if these comments are all that helpful... _________________ Good good study, day day up! |

I fixed it!
I took the cover off last night, and checked the connections but didn't find anything wrong.
This morning I got brave, took the cover off, and then removed the keyboard - and there it was. One of the ribbon connections was totally disconnected. The keyboard has 2 separate ribbon connectors, splitting the keyboard. Crazy.
Thanks for all of your help! |

That's the same thing I had with the OB-12. When I first received it, the two halves of the keyboard were actually swapped over, as the previous owner had plugged the ribbons into the wrong sockets. At least the symptoms gave me a pretty good clue as to a diagnosis.
Good job sorting that out. Bet you'll enjoy it all the more, now. _________________ Good good study, day day up! |

Oh yeah!
I'm loving it.
This thing sounds so robust and warm. It makes my JX3P sound like a little toy.
What is it about the Nord architecture that makes their VA set up sound so damn good? |

HAHAHA, classic! I love those damn corners more than any other synth feature EVER! Unfortunately, I only have the rack version. The corners (and general build quality) are the only things I really miss about not havnig the keyboard version. I have a G2x, for which the metal work is really not as good as the Lead 1 keyboard version. I have the nice modwheels, I have the great keyboard with aftertouch (channel at least), I have the great Pitch Stick (TM), BUT NOT THE DAMN CORNERS!
uhhh, deflated now... have to go loose myself in some work. _________________ Good good study, day day up! |

I love the sounds of the Leads. I think the Lead 1 possibly sounds a bit warmer than some other Nord gear. At least it is easier to get warmer sounds from my Lead 1 than my G2x. I haven't used the other Leads, but they seem really good in their own ways, too.
I haven't really achieved the kind of smooth warm fuzzy character (does that make sense?) of the Junos or JX synths. I use a friend's Juno 106 sometimes, and love its character. I can just never get past my love for all different types of synth sounds.
