I'd normally just use a 7805.
The 317 is good if you want to fine tune the voltage though, and you could dial in exactly what you want. For me, using XX3205's, this would be a good option, as I remember the datasheet saying their optimum voltage is around 6.5V or 7V. I might try that when I get back to my breadboard.

Great stuff , i've got 10 pt2399 chips i got cheap from Hongkong on Ebay that have been lying at the back of my component drawers Smile .
Xmas holiday breadboard project i think.
