SOUNDS LIKE NOW, an innovative music festival featuring some of the most respected, experimental musicians/performers in today’s music, will be running at the La MaMa Annex Theater on October 14 through October 17.

This festival will include over 100 musicians and feature artists such as Muhal Richard Abrams, Robert Ashley, Thomas Buckner, Jin Hi Kim, MacArthur “Genius” Prize awardee George Lewis, Alvin Lucier, Roscoe Mitchell, Phill Niblock, Pauline Oliveros, Carl Stone and performers Kato Hideki (Fred Frith, Marc Ribot), Ikue Mori (John Zorn, Arto Lindsay), Jim O’Rourke (of Sonic Youth and Wilco fame), Zeena Parkins (Bjork, Yoko Ono), and the award winning, internationally renowned, DJ Tamara.

These artists have had a significant influence on the most forward thinking music of the past 40 years. It is hard to imagine today’s DJ/dance culture or hip-hop scenes, noise rockers or much of the sonic textures heard in film/video games or even TV commercials existing had these experimental musicians not done the hard work. They have always been the first to embrace computers, sampling, new sonic vocabularies and extended timeframes, and almost everything else that has contributed to the lurching forward of the dominant contemporary pop culture.

Sounds Like Now
