The MOTU unit arrived looking good. I got what I thought was the necessary accompanying software from the MOTU website but the computer never knew it was there. I sent it back for a refund.

Now, think about this... in order to 're-register' this unit, MOTU needed for me to have the previous owner and registerant contact MOTU so they could transfer the serial number to me. My seller is a dealer in surplus and used equipment. He deals in probably hundreds of pieces of equipment, some of which are likely 'estate' sales. He had no earthly idea who the original owner was. You know, the original owner may be dead and buried years ago! Sad There are only two entities that actually know who the original owner was... the original owner (if still kicking) and MOTU who had the name, address and eMail of the registrant on file. Why, then, did I need to come up with all that information? I even offered to photograph the box, complete with serial number, to prove that I was, in fact, in possession of said equipment and that little gem was ignored.
So remember my tale of woe if you are offered a piece of MOTU with zip!

What dealer in surplus and used equipment did you purchase the MOTU Micro Express unit from? Was it the Motu Micro Express 96 Channel MIDI 4x6 Interface PC/ MAC - NOT the USB version or the older USB and AC adapter version without the removable rack ears or the newest USB powered model available now?

The Micro Express was purchased from an eBay seller who accepted the return of the 96 after I determined that it was an unsuitable replacement/backup to my MIDIator. It was not USB but (I was told) interfaced via a (ha ha) parallel port (and, yes, that particular machine involved is of a vintage which sports a parallel port).
Necessary drivers/interface were obtained via www.driverguide.com
As an Amateur Radio operator who deals from time to time with MFJ in Mississippi... even though MFJ has a spotty reputation with many hams, they do have manuals online for equipment they haven't sold in fifteen years. MOTU equipment is superb but lack of online documentation is problematic.
I am no longer in possession of the Micro Express and will probably never purchase a MOTU anything without complete documentation included.
Have a good holiday.. I'm watching Clark Grizwald and his Christmas lights. "Some of the lights aren't twinkling, Clark!"
