No DJ app on the iPod!? |
 |
|
I want an app that can simply play two files from my iPod at once, and cross fade between them, start and stop individually and the such - no need for beat mixing or anything fancy. But I want to be able to play files in my playlist, not some strange mono mp2 format that I have to load through wifi.
It seems that I have stumbled into a bit of apple politics - there is nothing of the sort to be found! It appears that apple will not allow any player but their own to rule the ipod/iphone realm.
I have found one app (remixmonkey) that claims to do what I need, but their website is a wasteland so I'm sheptical.
Has anyone found something useful? _________________ Muied Lumens Sub Forum

Hmm, turns out that there is a delay, and apparently this delay is due to Apple's attitude rather than any development problems... It looks like Apple is intentionally holding back on DJ-apps for the iPhone.
Create Digital Music entry
... and there is more where that came from! Here for example.
In fact, there has been a petition set up for making DJ-apps available for iphone/pod, you can sign it if you think it will help.
I'm not extremely bothered by not having a DJ app on my iPod, but I am a bit bothered by corporate behaviour like this. _________________ Muied Lumens Sub Forum

I'm more than a bit bothered by it .. it's really annoying and Neelie should do something about it ... i.e. fine it. _________________ Jan

TouchDJ is exactly what the doctor ordered! It is very stable and really does what it says on the tin! It is a little expensive as apps go, but well worth the price if you need DJ facilities on your iDevice.
I did a set on the radio yesterday for 3+ hours, playing a selection of washing machine jams, and TouchDJ didn't even as much as blink.
I am now using this instead of the native player on my iPod, but note that this app does not support playlisting, neither can you access the iTunes library from it.
You have to load files separately into touchDJ for them to play - it is made easier with a program on this page:
http://amidio.com/dj/#
Scroll down to the last paragraph, next to the video. It supports drag & drop of files through the USB cable (as opposed to over wifi) - at least in winXP.
TouchDJ takes some time to load once you have bought it because it contains music tracks - you can hide these tracks in the setup once installed. _________________ Muied Lumens Sub Forum

Rob, I'm looking for something to let me load short samples into my sampler, so need something that will play a file then stop when it is finished, would TouchDJ be able to do this? _________________ Jez

Hmm, for that, why not just use the native ipod player? Funny thing is, this is one of the least used functions on my ipod, after I got touchDJ, so I don't know how it would work, but loading some short, high bitrate samples should be fine. You could give them a special artist tag so that it is easy to find them.
I have the BeatMaker app, which is a sampler in itself, sort of a portable MPC with trig pads, a sequencer and some effects - that would be ideal, but it is overspecced (and overpriced) for just trggering samples for rerecording. _________________ Muied Lumens Sub Forum

Oh, and to answer your question, of course it would!
But again, it is pricey (as apps go) for this purpose alone. Your main advantage would be that it is very easy and quick to load files (via the USB cable, drag and drop in XP), but note that this app accepts mp3 files only, and there is a limit to the bitrate, although I can't remember what now (and their website is down for the moment...) _________________ Muied Lumens Sub Forum
