Hi all i have lurked this great forum for a while hello welcome

First project will be a MFOS weird sound generator. After that i will move on to experimenting with stomp box fx

Im ordering some bulk packs of resistors and ceramic/electrolytic caps that come with a selection of different values
But i cant find any diode or transistor packs are there some common types i should have on hand as i start out?

Are there any other components i could get now that would come in handy?
vactrols, bbd's, op amps, ?

Should i rip the filter chips out of my old synths??

I kid i kid Laughing

What a wise guy! Laughing

I really can't advise you on spare parts to have because I don't do building, I do designing - and new to that as well. However, the following are good for general purpose use:

For opamps it's good to have a few TL074's around, and get some LMC555 timers for general purpose use. To make a speaker driver you'll want an LM386 amplifier (drives 8 ohm speakers). Get some 2n2222 npn bjt transistors and some diodes, 1n4148 or 1n914 are fine. Don't forget a handful of LEDs with 1k resistors for current limiting. Also don't forget to order extra parts when you build a kit, those are the parts you're likely to need in other similar kits.

Good luck and have fun!

Les

Hi!

There are some parts that you need in multiple projects. I buy some resistors in bulk (all 1%: 1K, 10K, 100K, 15K, 47K, 470K), potmeters (100K linear), diodes (LED and 1N4148), transistors (2N3904 and 2N3906), some ICs (TL074, TL071, LF442, LM358), capacitors (100nF multilayer ceramic, 10uF electrolytic)
Watch out when buying on Ebay, there are some chinese suppliers who don't sell good quality parts.
See http://electro-music.com/forum/topic-31860.html for problems with bulk ordered resistors on ebay.

There are some suppliers that are cheap on potmeters and other parts. I buy most of the stuff at Futurlec (www.futurlec.com). They have some nice value packs (LED, linear ICs, electrolytic capacitors)

i do it this way: if i start a project i take the BOM and review my stock. if there are parts i am running out of, or i don't have them in stock at all, then i buy more than i needed for that particular project.
this way i have had a growing stock, and now i got everything in stock i need - at least most of the time, and except of exotic stuff. but you get the picture.

Hi, and welcome !

One thing you can do is to buy resistor, capacitor and LED assortment packs. Far from being a grab bag (which I do not recommend), you get a fair assortment of parts which you will find you need most of sooner or later. Buy extra 100k, 10k, 1k and 47k resistors. Potentiometers are a bit more of a problem, but if you get at least 5 of 100k, 10k, 47k, that'll cover enough to get started.

For semiconductors I think the previous replies are more or less right on. Don't just buy to build up stock there, once you start looking at projects you can order too many of something (I always order extras myself).

Don't forget to check the surplus houses in the area. Keep an eye out for ham radio swap meets and boot sales.

CA3080 are good to have on hand as well. LM13600, and LM13700 too.

Welcome to the darrrrrrk sside.

Thanks for the replies

I have added some futerlec component bags to the list diodes ic's, transistors and leds. From Rapid i have added to my order some of the ic's mentioned and some extra pots and extra spdt switches.
