Forgive my ignorance... I'm pretty new to all of this DIY stuff. A lot of the stuff I want to build (and have built) uses BC547 transistors. These are impossible to find locally, but as far as I can see the NTE123AP should be okay to use in its place. Am I wrong? My main confusion, however, lies in the orientation. I am not sure I understand the datasheet. I think I need to reverse the orientation of the NTE123AP. Can anyone confirm this?

It would appear your read on that is correct regarding orientation.

Why the NTE part? try a 2N3904, should be much cheaper than the NTE if you buy in bulk. May have ty flip orientation with the 3904 as well.

Thanks, that's what I needed to know. Why the NTE? Because a local place had a bunch of them on the cheap.

Funny how the single most common and cheapest transistor in Europe can be so hard to find elsewhere in the western world...
