Converting Polyphonic MIDI files for use on a mono synth |
 |
|
I am nearing completion of a MFOS Ulimate/Expander mono synth to which I have added MIDI in/out and sequencer functions with a micro.
Not having any real musical ability I rely on using midi files to play the synth.
Does anyone know of any utilities (or code etc.) that I can use to convert polyphonic midi files to monophonic ones for use on the synth.
I had the thought of writing a program to chop (arpeggiate) overlapping notes in a midi file, whilst this would work I am not sure what it would sound like!
Any thoughts or ideas on getting, creating or modifing midi files for use with a mono synth would be appreciated. |

Well, your monosynth will only be able to play one note at a time... so the selection of which note is a matter of taste.
The music files MAY use different MIDI channels for different part of the melody. Select one specific MIDI channel.
Try disabling all notes except the base line (or alternatively, everything the melody ). This may be possible by lassooing and selecting a limited note range, depending on what sequencer software you use. |

I agree selecting a midi track does cut down the number of poly notes, however I still spend a lot of time editing a track to modify any overlapping notes.
I can route the other tracks to another device in realtime (or I guess record multitrack).
I don't know why there are no midi files for mono synths as there are files for other mono instruments (such as flute etc.) but these tend to be classical or folky.
Most of the rock/pop midi files I have looked at have overlapping notes on both the melody and base tracks. (there are exceptions like "on the run" which everyone seems to show on utube on the analog synth)
I tried the option of apreggation of just overlapping notes on one track (using fruity loops) and it worked but it made the music sound a little like a mandolin.
I guess the only solution is to spend time with each track editing the notes to get music that sounds good.
If anyone knows of a net source of suitable mono midi files please respond. |
