I started this thread to see what people like to use.. here's three areas of inquiry:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
a) What is your most commonly used soft-synth?
b) What is your favorite:
1) Delay
2) Reverb
3) Compressor
4) Distortion
c) What is one freeware synth you would recommend? One freeware effect?
------------------------------------------------------------------------
My answers to the previous questions, which are pretty tough ones(!), are:
a) Shit. It's hard to know just which one I use the most. I would say of all time, Dominator from Computer Music magazine is my most used. It is really fun to program and clean-looking. Sounds pretty damned good. More recently it's been Sylenth. And Zebra. And Strobe from the DCAM Synth Squad. (I've had money).
b) Delay: Despite being pretty simple, I use Audio Damage's Dubstation the most. It's got the sound I want in a delay.
Reverb: This is tough. I guess my go-to reverb for subtle stuff is PSP SpringVerb which I got from Computer Music magazine. For more spacious reverb I have been using Toraverb from D16 Group a lot.
Compressor: I use a lot of different ones. My favorites are Cytonic's The Glue and Softube FET Compressor. They make amazing stuff, though I'm not crazy about their amp simulators.
Distortion: I gotta hand it to D16 Group again on this one. Their Devastor multiband distortion plugin has been my go-to for dirt for a long time, and I finally sprung for the Redoptor tube distortion as well, which is obviously different but equally awesome-sounding. Both are awesome on guitar and really anything else. Can't go wrong with these. Get them.
c) Man, there's tons of freeware that I love.. gotta browse my VST directory for a moment. Augur is an awesome Prophet VS emulation/wavetable vector synth that is just so unique. It's capable of stuff I would have no idea how to accomplish otherwise. So in that regard it's my top recommendation for synth users/lovers. As for effects I love all the destroyfx stuff. Amazing and free mangulation.
Please post! I'm really curious to see/hear what EM members use! |

hey, nice thread idea,
here are my preferences:
a) u-he zebra: modular vsti, my software nord modular, as sampler i like the one which comes with reaper
b)
1) uad-1 re-201 space echo emu and u-he morefeedbackmachine (mfm)
2) uad-1 re-201 (spring reverb emu) and liquidsonics reverberate (convolution reverb)
3) uad-1 la-2a emu (since i like dynamics and work mostly itb i do not use compressor/limiter plugins often)
4) u-he zebrify: modular effect, comes free with zebra
c) i only use zebra, for effects i can recommend the simulanalog guitar suite: simulates classic guitar effects, works well with synth sounds (use eq before effect to drastically alter output)
best regards
eike

What do you mean "my software nord modular"?
Did you write one yourself, or are you referring to the G2 demo software? _________________ Free Tibet. Release the Panchen Lama from prison. Let the Dalai Lama return to his home. |
