Howard is gonna get you, Howard is gonna get you, Howard is gonna get you....

Howard is gonna get you... to-night! Dunh Dunh, Dunh Dunhdunh! Oway Oway...

We're in the Schmooze Forum, so maybe it's not so bad. I try to refrain in other forums.

I do the same thing. Often, so I wouldn't think so. Nor my girlfriend, we're both cybersnoots.

I liked the cereal in the 80's. Now we're back on topic! And besides, that was a reference to "Rhythm is Gonna Get You" by the Miami Sound Machine, led by Gloria. That song is an 80's song, so I'm good. I both got us back on topic AND replied to the warning. Efficiency. Fnord.

Well.. Philip K. Dick died in 1982. John Lennon left the building. Reagan´s StarWars project got funding..
The western civilised capitalist nations still supported rotten regimes. The 80s was just another excellent decade.

Evil Genius: When I have the map, I will be free, and the world will be different, because I have understanding.

Robert: Understanding of what, master?

Evil Genius: Digital watches. And soon I will have understanding of videocassette recorders and car telephones. And when I have understanding of them, I shall have understanding of computers. And when I have understanding of computers, I shall be the Supreme Being! God isn't interested in technology. He knows nothing of the potential of the microchip or the silicon revolution. Look how he spends his time: forty-three species of parrots! Nipples for men!

Robert: Slugs.

Evil Genius: Slugs! He created slugs! They can't hear, they can't speak, they can't operate machinery. If I were creating the world, I wouldn't mess about with butterflies and daffodils. I would've started with lasers, eight o'clock, day one.

Cosmos. That was in the 80s. I remember that show. I wish Carl Sagen was still around today so he could tell us about string therory.

Another 80s thing. I moved to Allentown just about one month before Billy Joel realeased the song. Funny, people here thought it was a commentary on what had happend - "They're closeing all the factories down." Turns out to be prophetic instead.

Carl Sagan was my hero growing up. Not musicians or athletes or actors or any of that. It was Carl Sagan. When he died, I went for a drive with Vangelis' "Heaven & Hell" going and cried. Bloody shame.

Seraph pointed out this thread to me - yes I'm definitely a product of the 80's to some extent (went from 10-20 years old that decade - I was born in 1970 so it's generally easy for me to remember how old I am on most days...) So high school and lots of stuff through that time frame. Old enough to remember there not being an internet, young enough to have bought a lot of vinyl without it being a nostalgia or a dj only thing.

Japan/Sylvian - yeah - wonderful stuff and all of them still releasing good music.

Atari - I've been getting nostalgiac for video games lately. I'm not sure what prompted it - bought an XBOX over a year ago almost specifically to play Morrowind, but after playing a few months I left it in the box again until this January.. picking up a number of titles - several of the video game museum releases - Galaga, Pac-man, Joust... wonderful stuff.

I was really, really tempted by the "Intellivision Lives!" release that just came out - but all the reviews say it's pointless with modern controllers - very hard to play any of them. I'm a bit bummed. (Note - that the intellivision controllers were like a phone keybad with a disc).

Anyway - otherwise I'm not really a "gamer" in the true sense - I just play once in a while - and got the XBOX becuase I can't really play them on my computer due to the old wrists...

80's... hmmmm

Yello's Oh Yeah - hard to escape that tune - it was everywhere.
John Hughes movies - and all the brat pack stars.
Any drive-ins that were still standing - were pretty much demolished.
Izod's. Turned up preppy collars.
Kids wearing black trenchcoats and thinking it was a new thing.
Kids listening to punk and dressing punk and thinking it was a new thing.
(funny - that happens every decade doesn't it?)

Anyway...

I was listening to that song today and I realized that Allentown is your Allentown.
btw I remember as a kid to have met relatives living in Pittsburgh, PA but I have lost track of them.

Yes, it is my Allentown. Bethlehem is also mentioned in the song. When he wrote this it was about the Bethlehem Steel mills closing. Now the company doesn't even exist. Tens of thousands of people who worked there and retired have no benifits or pensions now. It was one of the biggest companies in the USA thrught the 1960's.

When the song Allentown came out we never thought that they would be closing down the microelectronics and optoelectronics factories too. Crying or Very sad

Things are continuing to decline here. It won't be long before the only thing that's left is electro-music.com. Shocked
