Edit: TC-11 now has a dedicated sub-forum. The first for an iPad app!
http://electro-music.com/forum/forum-209.html (mosc jan19, 2012)

Bloody hell! This looks amazing fun! And the potential as a musical instrument? What can I say?? Cool

TC-11 is the fully programmable, professional multi-touch synthesizer for the iPad. Choose from the 64 included presets, or build your own using touch controls, device motion, and on-board modules. Create music with the next evolution of synthesizer control!

FEATURES:
64 built-in presets
Unlimited user patches
Fully controlled by multi-touch / device motion
21 modular synthesis objects
22 oscillator waveforms
3 controller modules: AHDSR, LFO, Sequencer
Email custom patches to your friends
Full display customization
MULTI-TOUCH CONTROL:
There are no on-screen knobs, keys, or sliders to fiddle with; all synthesis is driven by your multi-touch performance. Touch relationships like distances / angles / timings perform all the controller functions. It's just you and the full screen multi-touch performance area.

EVERY synthesis parameter can be controlled by ANY multi-touch controller. The patch possibilities are limitless!

DEVICE MOTION CONTROL:
Use the iPad's accelerometer, gyroscope, and even the compass to attack your synthesis patch! Tilt and move the iPad to change any filter, effect, or module. You can create real vibrato by moving the iPad during performance, or change the speed of a sequencer by tilting forward and backward!

SYNTHESIS:
TC-11 has 8 voice polyphony for full, real-time synthesis. The audio engine has been highly optimized to deliver crisp, responsive performance. Choose from 22 oscillator waveforms, 3 oscillator types, 3 filter types, 4 unique effects, amplitude modulation, and panning control.

Fully programmable AHDSR, LFO, and sequencer modules make TC-11 the most capable iOS synthesizer in the world.

Use TC-11 in your band during live performances. Add TC-11 into your laptop orchestra. Experiment and create with the next evolution of synthesizer control!

Yep, this really looks cool.

I got his little drum app for iPhone, Invis Drums. (Same developer)

http://www.bitshapesoftware.com/instruments/invisibledrumset/

Works exactly as shown, but it is not trivial to play it. It requires practice and technique. Kinda put me off about buying the TC-11. I probably will, after someone here reports on it positively.

Howard! That's a terrible thing to say! That's like saying, don't bother learning how to play the violin, because it's a hard instrument to learn! Shocked

Surely you didn't mean that? Confused

Sure I mean that. A simple app like this should be simple to play. Take for example, Thumb Jam, a much more sophisticated synth and much easier to play. A violin is something else entirely. Anyway, I didn't find these drums very sensitive. It misses hits. It's cool to get some audience reaction with visual action on stage, but, lets just say it's not a Buchla Lightning.

TC-11 looks really fun. I just want someone else to take the plunge.

By the way, unless some kid is dying to play the violin on his own, I would never suggest violin lessons. Piano for the kids. Just MHO.

Why ever not? The important thing about lessons is that they are usually backed up by having to pass a grade. Grades are a good thing. Yes anyone can turn a know a make a funny sound, but they are useless if you want to make a career out of playing in an orchestra.

Of course there are exceptions in the absolute. My father-in-law being one of them. Alan was a child prodigy, who never studied for a piano grade in his life, and then went to study music at Kings College, Cambridge, where he received a 2:1 (not a first as you may expect from a child prodigy?). But that kind of talent is extremely rare.

My eldest daughter just passed her grade 1 violin obtaining a merit. Her teacher said that she should go straight into grade 3 next. But she's got there because Rosie has put a rocket underneath her and has made her practice everyday. It's given her an air of confidence, because I think if we hadn't have pushed her, she wouldn't have done it by herself.

I would encourage anyone to take lessons. Picasso had to learn how to draw before he could paint in a cubist style (he pretty much invented cubism!)

OK, Tom. I didn't mean it personally. chill

Music lessons are good for kids. The violin is a popular instrument. Mozart learned how to play the violin and he turned out OK. I'm just of the opinion that the piano is easier to approach and offers more options to the student going down the road. Mozart wrote for both, but more for the piano. I'm glad my mom got me piano lessons.

Anyway, for me, at this point in my musical life, if I'm going to take up a new instrument, it's going to be have to be easily accessible. I'm now studying the Theremin - it's hard enough.

No need for the patronising chill emoticons now...!

I'm actually quite a 'chilled' chap. I'm not American that's all and therefore tend to be a little more on the feisty side!!!

The Theremin is way harder to play than a violin!!! Good luck to you! You'll need it!

I still want an Ondes Martenot. I'd have one over all this electronic gadgetry any day!

Is that a "warning" how could that be? TC-11 is brilliant! I downloaded it last night. This could be the new Nord Modular app we've been waiting for on electro-music.com! Very Happy

The warning is for people who don't have 12 min. to spare but are in danger of getting sucked in by that review video.

I've just spoken with Kevin Schlei, the developer of TC-11, who says that the microphone bug will be fixed in the next update.

Kevin also said that there will be lots of optimisations in the next release. TC-11 is also being developed on the iPad 1 which is brilliant news.

I hope he brings an editor out for the Mac too. Smile

The newfound enthusiasm for this app raises the next question...

How does it compare to Jasuto Pro for iPad?

Easier to use?

More options for playing patches as a musical instrument? I know Jasuto has a keyboard and tilt support, but not as pretty and fancy a UI as TC11.

$30 bargain. I really mean that!

Jasuto is good for other reasons. But Jasuto tries to be too much of this age. TC is more like something Don Buchla and Frank Lloyd-Wright would have dreamt up for the future.

There's more work to done- like I'd love a way for the software to remember a performance, but for now it's tiny in size (a really good sign), looks like it was written entirely in XCode, and it works well on an iPad 1!

I've got very limited internet for 4 days tomorrow, as I'm down in Bognor with my mum and the family. 4 days of TC-11 joy! Cool

I got Grain Science too- that's another really great new app. That ain't cheap either. Perhaps people are getting ready to pay more finally?

and don't forget Jasuto only cost 69p when it came out Andy Wink

Governor and Tom, you got me. I'm sold on TC-11. Looks like fun well worth the $30. Too much iPad app stuff to learn, so little time.

party time!
