The XOR gate is handy as a digital ring modulator but perhaps you only need one XOR gate so a4030 or 4070 is overkill ( they have 4 XOR's ) I have devised a means of generating the XOR function using one 2 input NAND gate and 3 schottky diodes and 2 resistors.

D1, D2 and R1 produce a standard OR gate, what is needed to create the XOR function is that the output of the OR is only high with either but not both of the inputs are high. Therefore the situation where both inputs are high needs to be excluded, that's where the NAND gate, R2 and diode D3 come into play. When both inputs are high the output of the NAND goes low pulling down the output to 1 diode drop above ground, in other words it is a low output.

ah, you split it in 2 functions and joined them together, nice.
are you familiar with the discrete XOR ?

yes, that is a bridge rectifier.

I don't think that I've seen this one, thanks! Smile

There is a passive one with diodes too. However you need a couple of audio transformers for that one.
