Help me please ! Confused
I've just got mad and bought an Edirol FA-101 FireWire audio/midi interface (used)
...and immediately after that I bought an Apple iMac G5 to use it with...
Apart of the fact that the money is now finished, I'm depressed because when I plug the FW cable in both iMac and FA-101, EVEN WITH iMAC AND FA-101 TURNED OFF, a perfectly audible creepy sound full of pops and cracks comes up ! Crying or Very sad
This happens whenever I select the FA-101 to be powered by iMac FW or AC adapter. This happens as long iMac is plugged in the AC Outlet 220v.
I'm using a Yamaha HiFi amplifier as final, connected through RCA + RCA/Jack converters.

Question Who's the fault ? Question

thanks for reading

this is common on pc laptops, and you will often see it only in one of the following 3 situations:
1. running on battery, not plugged in
2. battery charging, running on ac
3. battery fully charged, running on ac

you can try to lift the ground from the power supplies. if there is no serious problem (and there may be...procede at your own risk), you can try to ground the laptop (via any exposed metal ground).

I would:
1) try another FW cable
2) try another FW bus
3) try the same audio interface with another computer
4) try the same computer with another FW audio interface
5) check audio/midi setup
6) reinstall driver
7) ask Mother Teresa of Calcutta for a miracle Idea

Hi, first of all thank you for your answers and my apologies for the "doppione" (double post) on Apple Comp section, I was someway anxious.
Anyway... as Seraph suggested
Quote:

1) try another FW cable (I've tested the other only cable I have on a HP laptop - no noise - but it is a 4pin/6pin, thus incompatible with iMac G5)
2) try another FW bus (done this one, nothing changed using both busses on both devices )
3) try the same audio interface with another computer (fortunately next week I'll have the opportunity to test the FA-101 on another Mac)
4) try the same computer with another FW audio interface (fortunately next week I'll have the opportunity to test onother audio device of the same model on my iMac G5)
5) check audio/midi setup (checked, seems all right)
6) reinstall driver (no drivers needed)
7) ask Mother Teresa of Calcutta for a miracle (%&*Twisted Evilยง#!)

...the interesting thing is that if connect to the HiFi through optical channels 9 & 10 of the FA-101, the noise disappears.

Thanks again and ciao!

Try using a ground lifter on all of your equipment.

Uh.. one thing... does the noise come out of the Yamaha amp? And not on recordings?

Do you hear this with headphones.. when the yamaha is disconnected?

The sad end of all this is ...

It's the iMac G5 !!!
............

... must say that with normal jack connections through mixer, things change quite significantly, the noise is audible only over 2/3 of total excursion, but it's definitely there

Another good thing is that all inputs don't appear to be affected by the noise and the recordings through mic and direct passive guitar seem quite clean.
I can immediately test it using optical outputs.

It's unlikely that something is wrong with home electricity outlets. General no-ground wiring should have caused similar issues in the past.

I've not yet tested it with another iMac G5.

Bye and again, thanks to all of you.
