[De]fragmenting Architecture Subject description: 10-minute processed video artwork
Title: [De]fragmenting Architecture
I exhibited a 10-minute, processed video artwork entitled [De]fragmenting Architecture on September 14 at the First Workshop on Computer Vision For Fashion, Art and Design as part of the 2018 European Conference on Computer Vision in Munich.
This video piece is inspired by the perceptual mechanisms of the human visual system, which extracts & analyzes color, spatial, edge, & symbol aspects separately, then integrates them into a composite, perceived image. Software fragments each still image into overlays based on dominant colors, then uses them as fading curtains that rotate & reveal the underlying, composite, original image. Contrasting-color vegetation images and contrasting-geometry architectural images work especially well with this technique.
Technical description: Video runs 10 minutes. Custom software posterizes 8 copies of each original image according to dominant color (8 layers, 1 per color), builds 8 partially transparent overlays using original colors selected for 1-of-8 layers by its dominant color, then uses these overlays as curtains, rotating & fading them until revealing the original image, then repeats with a new image. See section 4 of this paper. Proceedings of the 33rd Annual Spring Conference of the Pennsylvania Computer and Information Science Educators (PACISE) Shippensburg University of PA, Shippensburg, PA, April 6-7, 2018. This won the Best Faculty Paper award. _________________ When the stream is deep
