On February 12, 2022, Alexander Paul Dowerk, a Berlin-based music producer, composer and touch guitarist, was invited to a Materiaal recording session at the Secret Vault Studio in Kreuzberg, Berlin. The recordings resulted in a complex and powerful interplay between Bernhard and Alexander, rich in variety. Alexander brought a strong sense of detail and groove with complex rhythmical structures to Bernhard's impromtu electronica madness.

With this release we are referring to "Internationales Congress Centrum Berlin" (abbreviated ICC Berlin), one of the largest conference centres in the world. It is 320 metres long, 80 metres wide and 40 metres high. It opened in 1979 as sort of a counterpart to another iconic futuristic building, the Palace of the Republic, which has opened only three years before. The ICC Berlin is a landmark of German post-war architecture, in which the spirit of an optimistic modernism is very present.
But if you look at the building up close now, the corrosion is already pretty obvious. In addition to that whole building is contaminated by asbestos. It seems that it became such a symbol of the decay of the promises of a better future that we were once given.

On April 15, 2022, Bernhard and Wolfgang Seidel met for a recording session in Wolfgang's studio that is situated in a former printing press manufacturing plant in Berlin’s Wedding district.

Wolfgang's studio is not only equipped with a wide range of electronic musical instruments, but also various acoustic percussion instruments and all kinds of sound sources are ready miked and prepared for recordings at any time. And so, the recording session took place in a very focussed mood, and it then resulted into something that has quite a narrational and heteromorphic flow.

The recordings were mixed by Wolfgang. For the second piece he later overdubbed additional drums. Also, the length of the two tracks is intentionally set to suggest a vinyl release.

Christine Kriegerowski depicted the musicians as stylites or pillar-saints. Stylites are a type of Christian ascetic who lives on pillars, they believe that the mortification of their bodies would help ensure the salvation of their souls.
This image of the two musicians as pillar-saints is of course not without self-irony and alludes to how much musicians of this genre are on a lost cause.

Recording of the third session together with artist Wolfgang Spahn and his large, self-built modular system in Wolfgang's studio in the Gerichtshöfe, January 29, 2022; Wedding district in Berlin.

This release is themed op-art, as Christine Kriegerowski has contributed her takes on Vasarely’s “Reech”.

Wolfgang Spahn is an Austrian-German visual artist based in Berlin. His work includes interactive installations and performances of light & sound. His art explores the field of analogue and digital media and focuses on both their contradiction and their correlation. That’s why he is also specialized in re-appropriated and re-purposed electronic technologies.

For his creations he explores the abilities of hardware, constantly pushing its limitations in order to make it serve his artistic concept. Recently he developed analogue synthesizers as well as analogue computers and analog neuron networks and uses them to create abstract light-and-sound-sculptures.

In this live performance, which consists of two sets, TaboTago pays tribute to the history-charged place that is the Church of Zion. Among other things, the church gained importance as Dietrich Bonhoeffer was the pastor here. Bonhoeffer was a renowned theologian who was involved in the German resistance against National Socialism.
Shortly before the end of the GDR, the Church of Zion was a center of the opposition.

Recording of a studio session at Andreas von Garnier's Synthasis Studio in Wilhelmshagen, Berlin, June 17, 2022.

The Wilhelmshagen sessions, taking place on a non-regular basis at Andreas's studio, are a opportunity to experiment, play around, try out various new settings and combinations and eventually go completely bonkers.

---

The current Wilhelmshagen Session is themed by three potatoes already that overdue to sprout shoots.
The German potato is greatly underestimated in its improvisational talent. But if one only thinks of its origins in the Americas, its changeful history, and the potato's ability to form these astonishingly baroque shoots, the term "şişko patates," (thick potato) which is commonly used in Turkey for "tubby fat dumb," does not really apply and it should be understood rather as flattery.

Materiaal Series, Part 057

Recording of a studio session at Dirk Schlömer‘s Amygdaland Studio in Kreuzberg, Berlin, July 12, 2022.

ORNMNTL is an offshoot from the organic groove music project Ornah-Mental by Dirk Schlömer. Bernhard joined Dirk in 2018 to work on the release „Strong and Stable“ and play a few live gigs.

Dirk Schlömer is no stranger to the German music scene. Born in Cologne, he was guitarist in the german band “Ton Steine Scherben“; one of the first and most influential German language rock bands of the 1970s and early 1980s, a musical mouthpiece of a new left movement during that time and in their hometown of West Berlin in particular. Schlömer also worked closely with Rio Reiser, the front man of that same band, but who later started to work as a solo artist. Furthermore Schlömer was the Mastermind of “Das Zeichen“, a german gothic-ethno project, to name just those out of many others bands and projects worth mentioning.

When they were working on Ornah-Mental’s current release „Strong and Stable“ Bernhard had the idea create music in the same manner, but with a more playful approach, also with potential live performances in mind.

ORNMNTL 20220712 is the first session of what may be an ongoing series in which we explore and intensify the way we play together in an impromtu setting, and which may opens up to a new way to perform powerful and spontaneous live shows.

Recording of the live performance by Bernhard Wöstheinrich and Leander Reininghaus on the occasion of the finassage of Bernd Riehm and Christine Kriegerowski's exhibition "Billions of years before the end of the world, rhapsody for two" at Wolfram Spyra's
Gallery World Wide Window, Frankfurt/Oder, August 21th, 2022

Leander and Bernhard have picked up the vibes of the detailed, lively, desperately admonishing, but always humorously distanced images by Riehm and Kriegerowski and complemented them musically the with their mesmerising, yet powerful soundscapes, full of atmosphere.

Recording of the rehearsal for the live-performance at the opening of the exhibition titled “Weil es wirklich wichtig ist” (“Because it really matters”) by Manfred Makowski, which took place at the house of the district council Gütersloh, October 27, 2022.

The main subject of this exhibition were historical methods of printing. Manfred has made it his duty to preserve these techniques and to work creatively with them. Hence this present music session includes sounds and noises from various letterpress machines and other ambient sounds from printing plants and the like.
