Arturia considering a rack version of Moog Modular V? |
 |
|
Hey everyone!
I received an email from Arturia regarding their Moog Modular V softsynth. They were looking for feedback/thoughts about the possibility of a rack mount hardware version of the software. A few people also asked if they were considering doing the same with CS80-V - their software version of the venerable Yamaha CS-80. It's an interesting idea though I think the thing that a lot of people miss is the hands-on hardware (knobs, switches, etc...) I use MMV and really like it - it does require some computer power but sounds pretty good (no it's not a true modular sound...but even those sound different from one to another...and they are a LOT bigger!). I would REALLY like to see a control panel for it - 10 or 12 space panel with knobs and switches all over it - set up to communicate with the MMV software either via MIDI or USB/Firewire...

I assume that Aruturi's MMV can have virtually anything controlled by MIDI. So you could use any MIDI controller from Peavy, Deopfer, or any of the others. Am I missing something?
A bunch of us are big into Clavia Nord Modulars and we're planning to get the new G2. Even with their new improved physical playing interface, there is much to be desired for live performance. Jack Tamul and I have been discussin building custom midi control panels suitable for live performance. The advantage of building one yourself is you can put knobs, switches, lites, and other control devices where youn want on the panel, in groupings that make sense. We're looking into the DIY products offered by Doepfer. We'd really like to use the rotary controllers like are on the G2 and the ION. |

MMV does support the use of midi controllers whether it's the knobs on a M-audio Ozone or something as sophisticated as a Mackie Control. MMV works fine on my system, so a rack unit wouldn't neceessarily be an improvement for me - it's the control interface that I miss and even though I have a Spirit 328XD which can work as a control surface, it would be nice to have a more application- specific control interface with knobs for most of the different parameters and switches and indicators for other functions. This really should not be too difficult to implement - it's a matter whether enough people would buy it to make it worthwhile to build. I do think if MMV came out in a rack form it would sell quite well. |
