Guys, I'm trying to recreate a sound using the G2 and was wondering if you could help. I'm trying to make something that sounds as rich and detailed as the main stab / lead in this:

If you can point me to any G2 patches that you know of I'd be very grateful

Cheers,
Dave.

Hi,

I sent the link to someone, as I thought it may be his kind of tune. He reckons that kind of sound can be done with a DX7 and a Space Echo, which he used to own. I think there is some filtering being done too, though.

Cheers captain, I'll patch up a DX7 in my G2 and have a play. The sounds have a great texture to them that I like.

Yeah, very nice sounds. Chilled, ambient, floating... I've actually wondered about how to patch those sounds before. Maybe you can crack the secret.

Any progress? Does FM seem to get you there?

Hi,

Have a look at this youtube clip of a DX100, around 1:41 onwards. Is that the kind of sound you are after? This was posted by the guy who suggested a DX for this patch. This clip was not a response to your question though, just something he happens to have online.

BINGO! Thanks! So the DX100 it is then. I've been patching a bit with a DX7 patch in my G2 and am struggling to get away from bell-like sounds and into the more gritty sounds I'm after.

What is the difference between a DX7 and a DX100? I'm not sure.

The DX7 had 6 operator FM, whilst the DX100 was simplified 4 operator FM

To get more gritty sounds you need to increase the FM modulation depth and maybe add some feedback, then play with the pitches of the modulating oscillators, lower pitches tend to produce buzzier sounds

From memory, I think the 4 op versions had additional wave forms for FM, not just sine. Perhaps square or others? I think that could be confirmed with a manual.

I think the later 4 op synths like the DX11 and TX81Z had other waveforms, but the earlier 4 op synths like the DX21, 27 and 100 were just sine waveforms still

The first clip is gone now, but I listened to the sound at 1:41 of the second clip.

I used to use a DX100 with a Boss SE-50 thru a MS1202. That sound really reminds me of stuff I would do with that combo.

Here is a patch that is close, but not quite right. OscPM1 and 2 are the main part of the sound. OscPM3 can be brought in with the mod wheel (that's a DX100 trick since there is no filter).

Most DX100 sounds can be recreated with OscPM and ADSR with some mixers if necessary.

The FX in the clip sounded like delay into reverb into phaser, so that's what I put there.

The digitizer and overdrive are to simulate the DX100 output.

The feedback compressor with overdrive and filter is to make it sound a little dirtier.

There was a ton of noise in the clip, it might help to mix in some noise somewhere in the FX area.

I don't think I got the Osc ratios correct or the envelopes fast enough. There are definitely some artifacts from fast envelopes on the DX100 that I haven't figured out how to model. It might be necessary to digitize all envelope signals and oscillators to get all the aliasing.

Thanks for that patch. The original track is below and I've added a couple of variations to your patch which kind of take me in the right direction.
