Performance sequencer (rev A) |
|
|
Hi all, here's a performance sequencer (e.g. for live sessions) that can drive an internal or external synth. It is inspired by both the Yamaha (e.g. RS7k) sequencers as well as the Sequentix P3. This is the first of a series of sequencers I'll work on.
PerfSeq32-A1 offers 2 mono sequencer tracks per slot (4 tracks for expanded machines), with the following features per track:
- Variable track length from 1-32 steps.
- Per-track clock (for unrelated track tempos).
- Clock randomizer (skipped clock trigger).
- Realtime track length change (smoothly over both sequencers).
- Realtime record into track from keyboard (with on/off switch).
- Variable playback speed.
- Manual reset to start of track.
- Smooth note randomizer (using note pool).
- Key scales, with 16 presets.
- Transpose.
- Note scale.
- Random gate skip per track.
- Gate length.
- Mute switch.
The main feature of this sequencer is the combination of the note sequencer (allowing record from the keyboard) combined with a note randomizer (which would normally be used with the volt sequencer). I used a shift register (the note pool) where the notes are received and a mux driven with a random source to pick out random notes from the pool.
The other important feature is the key quantizer with the 16 preset scales. Once a scale is selected, you can't go wrong, no 'bad' out of tune values, perfect for live use. You can even randomize the sequencers and you'll still be fine.
My personal fav though is the variable track length feature. I love to use a couple of tracks with different lengths (and playback speed) to form a soundscape.

Here's an mp3 I made from that performance: PerfSeq32Demo.mp3
I more or less slammed this together, but it illustrates how easy it is to do improvs with PerfSeq32 once you have a nice set of sounds handy.
It's 3 tracks, each with different length, playback speed and random settings. All tracks use the same scale. The bass track (in the FX section) is using a very slow playback speed combined with long gate values and a heavy trigger randomize settings, so it only triggers a note in about 50% of the cases. This is an ambient example, but you can of course also do fast stuff. It's just a sequencer.
Btw, all the controls for two tracks are available from the hardware front panel. An important feature I forgot to mention above.
