hi g2 people!

since a couple of months i have explore the potentials of sound synthesis with the phase mode oscillator. i have a lot of patches combining these oscillators to do the kind of synthesis of the DX7 operator and DX7 router. i have come to many kind of textures in my sounds, some of them that i use to make my music. But the physical meaning of the "phase mode" in this oscillator is not quite clear for me. I mean, i know whats the phase in wave mechanics, but in this case, the phase modulated by an audio source is quite abstract for me, as many other thins by sound design. i would like to understand more of this, to know where i want to get when patching and not to just move knobs until i get a nice sound texture. any idea?

It is more commonly (but less correctly) called FM.

See tutorial.

I don't find the math that useful though.

see the atached patch.

changing the phase of an oscilator is the same as changing the startpoint of a wave when this would be a sample...

when the same wave form, at the same level, is mxed wthe the other at 180 degree out of phase the 2 signals cancel each other out...

after loading you have to press the start button in the upper left corner...
to synchronise the 2 oscilators...

press the button of the pink module... the sound should disapear

because the phase mod input of the right phase mod osc is 180 degree ot of phase...

change the value of the pink module and the sound comes back...

see the yellow modules...the phasde mod lfo´s...they have a graphic that shows you whats going on...

the default setting is 180 degree out of phase..so no sound when switcjing over to the lfo´s...

when the phase ( waveform startpoint ) gets modulatete with another waveform the result is similar to frequency modulation..
see second patch
