Vestibular Chaos Subject description: A New Approach to Composing |
 |
|
I have been having an ongoing problem with the inner ear in both of my ears that, among other things, has made it very difficult to concentrate or work on a computer for long periods of time. I can get about 10-20 minutes of work done before I have to rest.
Previously, when composing music I would go full force all night long until I completed a song. Usually, the mixing and tweaking would span into a second or third day, but most of the composing would be done on the first day.
With my current health problem, my previous method of composing was not an option.
Also, I spend most my time either in bed or on the couch resting. Going to my studio often for short work sessions isn't a good option, especially since the dizziness cause by getting there drastically shortens the amount of time I can concentrate on something.
MY SOLUTION
I have VNC running on my studio computer all the time. I also added the Shoutcast server software. This allowed me to see and compose stuff in Ableton Live while listening to the composition over a local shoutcast stream, all while resting comfortably in bed.
I just left all my synths turned on and worked on little bits at a time over a long period of time. It took about two weeks to complete just one song, but I am very happy with the results.
I think that being forced to work in a new way has opened the doors for creativity. I took my time and thought about all of the changes I was making. For some things, I waited up to two days before I was able to login and make the changes. I believe that the forced patience has helped in the long run instead of rushing to complete it immediately out of fear that I would forget what I wanted to do.
Try changing up your method of composition and you might be surprised at what you accomplish
