I've removed the automation recorder for now, it needs many changes and didnt feel up to that lately.

I did fix some bugs tho, made a couple of new modules and some changes to existing modules.

See http://bluehell.electro-music.com/wren/#changes for details.

Nice version.

The SeqValues is a cool variation of SeqPattern.

Several new modules to play around with, very cool.

It has been a while .. but needed to make some bug fixes .. there is a new version again 2019.3.5.0. There are also a couple of new modules, and added some inputs to some existing ones.

See https://www.bluehell.nl/wren/forums.html#changes for details and https://www.bluehell.nl/wren/forums.html#top for the downloads.

And another one new update, 2019-.6.9.0... I've broken some stuff ...

Legacy audio is no longer supported, can do PortAudio only now.

Changed the AR envlopes in how they behave with time modulation, that may break patches which were using time modulation.

Added some new functions to the Monadic and Dyadic modules, old patches may select the wrong function now.

But also added some new stuff and fixed some bugs. Two new speach modules, two new Life variants, a voltage controlled pattern generator, an auto quantizer ... for a full report see https://www.bluehell.nl/wren/forums.html#changes

and for downloads https://www.bluehell.nl/wren/forums.html#top .

To use the eSpeak module you will have to download and install eSpeak ( http://espeak.sourceforge.net/download.html ) I've included the eSpeak DLL in the wren non-source zip, but it really needs some stuff to beinstalled to to be able to find any voices.

The eSpeak installation can also install some new SAPI voices, which can be used by the new SAPI speech module.

My website seems to have connectivity issues ... sorry about that .. working on it .. and meanwhile will monitor it to bring it up when I see it being off line. I should move it over from adsl to the fiber connection, but the domain registrar (xs4all) is not very cooperative and the adsl guys (novo) are a disaster too :?

Hmm .. I can just upload the stuff to here to I guess ... okay ..

The currently latest version (2019.6.9.0) seems to crash in the startup when eSpeak is not installed (while espeak_sapi.dll is present) .. when you do not wish to install espeak, renaming or removing the dll might help ... I'll try to come up with a solution for this issue soon.

When you do want to use eSpeak (for the new speech modules) you can download it from: http://espeak.sourceforge.net/

Half a year later already .. quite some changes .. so time for an update. 2019.11.11.0 (source code was updated as well).

Fixed the eSpeak issue mentioned above .. and a handfull of other nuisances. Then added some new stuff to some old modules and some new modules.

see https://bluehell.nl/wren/#changes for the full story.
see https://bluehell.nl/wren/#top for the downloads.

The summary :

* Over 300 module types now :-)
* Removed all support for legacy audio - only PortAudio can be used now - it was too much fuzz to keep legacy going.
* eSpeak bug fixed, to use eSpeak you will need to install it ( http://espeak.sourceforge.net/download.html )
* ProgDivider bug fixed.
* (De)Multiplexer oddities worked out
* A handfull of range errors and division by zero issues fixed.
* Allowed for quotes in patch names, patch comments and module titles.
* Copying of modules from one Wren instance to another would kill the settings for the tuning, fixed that.
* Looper, StereoLooper and WavePlayerwould not produce sound as long as the speed and the position inputs were left unconnected, changed that.
* The Constant, SeqValues, Lut and Knobs4 modules would loose knob and slider values when set to Note mode on patch reload or module copy/paste - fixed now.
* SeqValues module had wrongly colored dots, changed that.
* Vocoder squeal at 1/3 ofthe sample rate worked out.
* WavePlayer rate will now be correct on different sytem rates.
* VU meter updates made independent of the rate at which module lights were updated.
* Added an activation input to the eSpeak module.
* Added inverted outputs to a bunch of modules.
* Added changed outputs to a couple of modules, going active when the output value changes.
* AM modulation added to a handful of modules.
* Module feedback added to the history viewer, to see the selected module in the patch.
* Added filter mode to the PulseDelay, a non retriggerable delay mode.
* Added a PADSynth-like module.
* Added a GrainDelay module - which grains nicer than the existing ones, with less CPU used too - and that was module type 300!
* Added a MinMaxMix module, after an idea found here on the forums.
* Added a detector module - it outputs instantaneous amplitude, phase and frequency.
* Added a PhaseSplitter - with a sine input it generates a sine / cosine pair.
* Added an AbsAdder module, the sum of positive input values only.
* Added a DTMF tone generator.
* Added two Xenakis like number sieve modules.

Nope, Wren is not a nord clone.

From the FAQ :

Quote:
Wren is a monophonic synth. Still you can of course have multiple sounds or even multiple synths by patching them. The MIDI interface will need to work on a different channel though for each voice added this way, as it can handle only one note at a time. I've added a four channel MIDI input module to allow for manual patching of a fourfold poly synth.

Nice to see new updates for this wonderfull modular. Only what i miss is normal midi support because by network there is to much latency and maybe vst plugin. But excellent job with this anyway.

Ah ok .. will consider built-in MIDI for a future release .. not really using MIDI myself .. and already had that external program to do it.

Thank you for the feedback Smile

Ok, I've made the MIDI interface to be built-in now for the new 2020.4.13.0 release. This makes the NetMidi program obsolete and it will no longer be in the zip file (it can still be downloaded separately).

MIDI setup : Trough the main menu item "settings/MIDI devices" select the MIDI devices to be used for input and output.

MIDI Channel setting and (N)RPN prefs : In the Settings Screen [F3] select the MIDI Channel to use and select the (N)RPN preferred seting.

download : https://bluehell.nl/wren/#top
info about the changes made : https://bluehell.nl/wren/#changes

but please note the following:

2020-02-28: Changed file formats to all (except MIDI files, which are binary) use UTF-8.

Worst case, that is when you have used non ASCII characters in file names or module names, this may cause Wren to not start up anymore or to not be able to quit. Save your current Wren directories before changing to this version.

I've tried to program a fix for this to make things backwards compatible, but can not oversee all possible situations. In case you see any trouble please report ‐ what will fix it is removing the wren.ini file, but I'd prefer to provide a solution without history loss.

I ran into trouble with the previous version when I wanted to save a patch with a greek name which was not handled correctly. The new version of Wren handled all migration issues for me – YMMV … let me know please – and I'll fix it.

Thank's a lot for this update bluehell. Midi latency is very good now. If i can suggest something it will be gpu rendering, sometimes with big patches and low latency there are problem with rendering by cpu. Just suggestion. Thanks again for your work. Its such underlooked software.

Heh, thanks for testing - I'm glad it helped Cool

GPU would be great, I agree.

What you can do for now is hit CTRL+L to stop most lights from updating (and hit it again to turn that back on . .to see wtf is going on Wink ) .. saves a bit of CPU .. I do that when a patch gets too large (and they always do Shocked ) ... also on a larger patch you can usually set the control rate division higher .. that will possibly add some zippering here and there but on larger patches that usually is not too audible .. for me at least. And then there is the control rate to audio rate conversion module (SlowToFast, on the ctrl2 page) to selectively better up local zipperings ... I use that often for delay time modulation on delay modules when the control source happens to be blue.

Some little tricks Laughing

I've just released a new version 2020.5.27.0 for both the exe and the source packages.

See https://bluehell.nl/wren/#changes for the changes
See https://bluehell.nl/wren/#top for the downolads

Summary :

- Made an option to disable the popup windows on knobs, as this seemed to be very messy in Wine.
- Added some new LFO shapes.
- Added some new random types.
- Made a MIDI clock input module plus a rate conversion module to easily control LFOs and Delays so they sync to the MIDI clock. The Tapper module was updatd forthis too.
- Made a new sequencer with step length control.
- Made a new envelope range vfast for extremely short envelope times and made that mode avaialble on the granular modules and the pulse delay module too.
- Added double buffering to the granulators, they behave a bit smoother now.
- Changed the Slew moduleto have separate timing for up- and down-going signals.
- And some other small stuff.

Downloaded the update. Still no round-robin mode for poly midi in.
Do you plan to implement it?
And 8 note poly midi in module (or ajustable polyphony)...
