Hey, i, like many others am trying to decide between the microkorg and the micron

I really like the inerface of the micrkorg, (i dont really mind the small keys) because of the variety of knobs and buttons unlike the micron in which your limited to progamming what each button does

But i would like to know if the micron can loop little melodies and stuff because i would like to layer different sounds and stuff just playing the on one unit.

Also if anyone knows... can you loop on a mini-KP??? that would be really awesome cuz that things RUULZ

i like to play more indie kinda instrumentals
like sigur ros, M83, mogwai or ratatat. if youve ever heard of them
im not so much into the techno/house scene or w/e
i was wondering which one would be more suited with more kinda subtle/ ambient patches...
or could you just change them all anyway???
THANX

Yeah I heard of Sigur Ros, and many more will after today:

http://www.youtube.com/

HUGE props to them for uploading the Heima movie in its entirety to YouTube.

I briefly searched for Micron on Google a few months ago - none of the descriptions indicated there was looping ability in the Micron. At least Korg claims there's looping on the Mini KP.

Both the Micron and Microkorg have really crummy-feeling keys. Have you considered spending a bit more for a Korg R3? I think there's a $100 rebate on the R3 now, which brings its price to within $150 of either the Micron or Microkorg.

well, if you don't want to do alot of menu diving I don't think you'd be happy with the Micron.

in my opinion the micron sounds much better!
a lot of modulation, very good emulated analogue filters, a very good sounding device, better keys (microkorg are much smaller) and editing is ok.
this synth goes much deeper and has a very analogue sound for a digital synth. Microkorg sounds much thinner and only 4 voices Sad

i had them both.

yeah
the micron is sweet
like the guts of it are better than the microkorgs i agree with that
but i think i like the playability of the microrkorg because it hase so many buttons and knobs you dont have to go changing their parameters all the time

how do u think they differ like playing wise, not sound.

also do u know if u can loop on the micron??

If by 'loop' you mean play little melody snippets, beats etc then, yep, you can. I've programmed a few songs into my Micron and it really isn't that hard to build a kit that you can trigger live, breaking a song down (and up). And then solo over the top.

On the other hand, try and get the Micron to play too complex a Setup and the wee beastie will start dropping notes and playing rather arrhythmically. Very Happy

kewl
but to play "little snippets" over and over again in the background do u have to hold down a key or something or can u latch it?

IIRC, either. It's a powerful little keyboard but somewhat arcane to program due to the minimal interface. Smile

yeah thats the thing i dont know if i wanna go with the microkorg with the better interface or the micron with more stuff
i guess i could always just buy a digital delay pedal for micrkorg cuz those are sweet regardless of what you have.

Neither looks cool enough to buy exclusively on aesthetic appeal.

But the Micron is probably worth every penny sound wise..

Yep, being more serious for a femtosecond, the Micron is an awfully powerful synth and sequencer. And, if I remember correctly, doesn't it have a more powerful effects DSP than the Ion?

Any Ion users out there?

I have the MicroKorg -- the deciding factor for me was that the MK can run on batteries. For me that was a big plus, as I am frequently away from home waiting around with nothing to do, so I take the MK with me and tweak while wearing headphones. Loads of fun, plus as a bonus you always get strange looks from passers-by.

There are no menus on the MK at all, but you do have to twist the two big selector knobs to determine what the 5 edit knobs are controlling. It's all very well labeled, so it's not a huge hassle to make up your own patches. I printed out a spare copy of the manual, which fits nicely in the MicroKASE case.

The vocoder is fun to play, as is running external audio thru the
synth engine. Ring mod makes for great Dalek vocal effects.

The keys are decent enough, and you get 3 octaves worth, which is nice in a small-format synth.

But I think hands-down the Micron has the better sound quality, from demos I've listened to on the web. Not that the MK sound is bad; it's just not as huge as other synths. And it has limited effects -- just flange, chorus, phaser, and delay. No reverb, which is a big minus.

So it's up to what your priorities are. Battery power was a huge priority for me, but it may not be for you.

I think you hit the nail on the head --- if it sounds good to you, that's what's important. There will always be another synth that sounds better than the one you've got, but so long as you're enjoying the one you've got, that's what counts.

Don't forget, although the MK presets are good, there's always room to make even cooler patches of your own.

I love my MicroKorg to death -- I probably spend more time with it than any of my other synths, if only because it's portable and battery-operated.

I don't have a lot of free time, but there are times when I know I'm going to have a block of free time while I'm on the road, so I always grab the MK as I'm leaving the house so I can tweak while I'm killing time.

Sure, my Andromeda sounds miles better, but I can't take it with me, so it doesn't get played as much. Too many things to do around the house when I am home, so the big synths just sit there, unfortunately!

I can't think of any other battery-operated synths on the market at the moment. The Poly-800 ran on a stack of C-cell batteries, but it's a bit unwieldy and kind of limited. The Kaossilator is awesome, but you can't really tweak it; just play presets. But it is battery-operated, and even fits in your pocket!

Here's a quickie little Kaossilator movie:

the battery is awesome im not gonna lie
cuz u can just ake it outside on a nice day or w/e

yeah ive seen the kaossilator, that thing is pretty sweet
but i think id rather have a synth with keys so u can play exactly what you want
but the looping on it is really sweet

Yes, I have, on many occasions, sat under a tree outside, tweaking and playing on the microKorg. If you get a set of NiMH AA batteries, they'll go about 2 or 3 hours before needing to be recharged.

If you get the MK, I highly reccommend getting the microKASE case from Korg for it. It has a zipper pocket on the outside that is big enough for the vocoder mic, some spare batteries, and a small set of headphones, and it's reasonably well padded, and lets you sling the MK over your shoulder.

The Kaossilator is perfect for taking on an airplane --- it's small enough
that it doesn't bother the passengers on either side of you. The MK is a little big for that. But, yes, it's hard to play a tune on the Kaossilator without lots of practice. Kinda like a Theremin in that regard.

Good luck!

Russ

Sure, glad to help out.

If you go to the "Shameless Plug" link in my signature, then click on "electro1.mp3", the sound that comes in at 0:40, and drones on until 1:09, in that track is my microKorg, with a hand-rolled patch. It comes back in at 1:41-1:56 again, and a few times after that.

Sort of a dark ambient FM-ish drone patch. Sorry I don't have any better examples of my MK recorded; normally I don't have a recorder handy when I'm playing the MK. But you can get a little idea of what can be done beyond the presets.
