true, and i'm not going to leave. i was just very disappointed to feel those vibes at all. i never expected them, after feeling all the love at the last two cheltenham events.

i'm glad you are interested! i think maybe some of the people who feel defensive don't realize that yours is a viable attitude -- that this forum doesn't demand active participation all the time from EVERYONE OR ELSE YOU'RE SEXIST AND WE HATE YOU or something crazy like that.

this is my opinion too. one stange side effect of being a woman talking about women rather than a man talking about women, is a tendency on the part of others (often men) to assume that by "women" i mean "me" and by "tipping the scales" i mean "putting me in charge of everything whether it makes sense or not". this is not actually what i mean when i talk about those things though, although it's hard to define what i do mean.
what i do mean is something like this: having a forum for/about women, a special message to women who do electro-musical-stuff saying "yes! you too! get in here!". |

in the past I remember long lists of welcome messages to new members saying to be females. I remember someone noticing it was almost embarrasing  so, I don't see anything wrong if someone is "abrasive". no one can please everyone else plus, we have to remember that this kind of medium (an internet forum) where people from all around the world contibute messages can be very tricky to express personal feelings and similar touchy matters. I, for one, not being a native speaker, consider very risky to write something on a thread like this one. it's very easy to hurt somebody or being hurt by somebody.

I have encountered other forums where newbie (or other questions) were met with derision (RTFM type replies) and I can understand the apprehension of anyone new to an online community, male or female, to participate. No one likes to be humiliated.
The electro-music.community is one that will reach out to anyone who requests information, feedback, etc. Perhaps buried in the tens of thousands of posts here is a "RTFM" message however I haven't encountered any.
I am an idealist and feel that we all contribute to a better society when we encourage each other to work to our potential. electro-music embraces those ideals.
Would be great to have more role models for females in the electro-music genre.
What comes to mind is my daughter (almost seventeen) who is naturally talented, has perfect pitch (from what I can tell), and has a presence that would make her a natural performer. She, of course, has access to the music/recording studio at home. However, her view of laptops, synthesizers, etc.. is that it is "nerdy" (like her dad!). I can't get her to listen to, say, Amy X Neuburg because none of her friends listen to it.
The point is that female performers are often cast in limited roles (Maddonna, Brittany Spears, et al) and kids, in pursuit of stuff that is "cool" tend to write-off electronica as something "nerdy" and "uncool".
To see females posting in the forums is welcome, indeed. Look forward to hearing your music and reading questions, insights, and discoveries, too.

Yeah, I was getting the message that people were saying the forum shouldn't exist and that we are bumbling idiots. (Ironically while claiming that no one would ever do that to a woman in electro).
I seriously considered abandoning it, that it's not worth the time and effort to persuade people who want to tell you your concerns and ideas are unfounded and worthless.
..but then i remembered my mantra:
"#*^& the haterz." (keeping it family friendly)
So, onward to wherever. |

Well, that's the message that was easier to remember because it's a negative message. It's human nature to pay more attention to "fight-or-flight" stimuli than "happy" ones.
