Parameter control Nordlead 2x |
 |
|
How can I see where each parameter stands in the NordLead 2x when I change voices? I don´t see how I can handle this, it´seems quite confusing to me when I have a new voice and the parameters have changed but I don´t see where they are???
The NordLead3 has LEDs for parametercontrol of each parameter.
How does Clavia think users can handle this problem in the Lead 2x.
I think I should look for a used Lead 3 .. _________________ Andreas

Well, there you have the programmers bottleneck of the Nordlead2, in fact, of the NordLead1... It's an old design, for sure...
Indeed, om the NordLead3 there is an indication of something of a value on the knob itself and as soon as the knob is touched the LCD screen read the exact value. But there is no real overview.
For this I use two tricks, some very much 'works around', a grat deal of around. To the NordLead2 there is a Editor, called NordGen, free down load able, which loads the SysEx into the computer and to the synth. Pointing the arrow at a knob one can read the value without touching the parameter and change it!
To set a certain value to a parameter of the Nordlead2 press [Shift+LFO1-Wave Form] and the LCD reads the value of the parameter when touched, like the NL3.
The big difference between the NL2 and the NL3 is the latter has always the right position, where the NL2 parameter will 'jump' towards the value which is already at the physical knob. This is called immediate.
I know, it's not great fun, but it's still possible to design sounds on the synth. Still the NL3 has a much steeper learning curve...

To be honest, live I use the Performance mode trick. Just see the Performance as four separated Programs, made active by activating one Slot at the time. Mostly one just want to tweak just one or two kobs, even playing the Nordlead3, like the Cut Off, Osc Mix, PWM and of course FM. These parameters I assign to the Morph and the Wheel. Changing the Program in the Performance, I also set the Wheel to '0' immediately. Then I tweak everything like I want to... Sometimes I use three Performances (12 Programs) in one song... And sometimes, very sometimes, I tweak a knob

If I understand you right, the immediate effect will not appear, when you use the wheel for the desired parameter tweak?
Second question:
If I change to a new performance, how can I define, which slot will be active? F.e. in Performance A, slot A is active for tweaking. Then I change to performance B. Will slot A be still be active? _________________ Andreas

But there are work arounds. I use the Wheel, because mostly one use just a single parameter to tweak. While not playing I quickly turn it down, start to play and move the parameter while playing. Do I need more hands, I use the Control Pedal, which imitates the Wheel. Do I need more then one parameter at the same time, I use the Morph.
Anyway, this tweaking techniques look difficult and they are when improvising - to which a synthesizer is not the best instrument - rather complicated, but just realize it just as hard learning the chord changes of a song...
Stop playing is the easy way out, but what if... you want four continuous sounds (using the Arpeggiator in Hold) in succession to fade in and fade out. This can be done by turning up the Gain parameter from ) to the required level. So for the second sound it has to be 0, which means shutting down the first one. Not nice. But there is a work around, of course! (Should made a contest out of it... )
When Slot A has a running Arp and so has Slot B (set to the same value using [Shift+LFO1-Wave form]), I saved the Performance in which the Amp Attack of Slot B is max! Takes about 35 seconds to get heard, so time enough to prepare some parameters, like turning the Gain down, checking Hold function and the Wheel to '0'. When ready, the Gain is '0', I set the Attack to the 'normal' value, mostly also '0'=No Attack, but Slot B is completely silenced. Then I fade in Slot B, return the focus to Slot A again, after Slot B his its Gain value, and make a fade out in Slot A.
I do the same to Slot C en Slot D.
Mostly I use the Morph function to create two sounds in one Program, so I I'm realising eight sounds in four Slots, playing continuous...

Will slot A be still be active? | In a way this is needed to make the above mentioned situation possible.
Slot A is active and in focus.
When pressing just only Slot B, B will active and in focus.
Pressing Slot A and Slot B together (in practise almost together, but one of the two was a little later...) Both Sots will be active, only one of the two is in focus.
In focus means it reacts to the Panel (Knobs and buttons)
Active means it reacts to the Keyboard.
All Slots always react to Midi.

I see, things aren´t that easy as I thought on the Lead2x, because everyone (f.e. at harmony central user reviews) talks about the great ease of use.
But what I discover now, just before I have put the Lead2x out of his box which arrived today, is, that an easy function, tweaking a parameter, is quite tricky.
I just compared that to the Nord Lead3, and there you first get the LEDs to see, where youre parameter is, and second you have a real display where the parameter is shown. Third you have the Nord Manager for all the patches and performances which I also prefer.
I just phoned with the guy who sells his Lead3 on ebay and I will buy it, he had a Lead 2 before and says that the Lead 3 sounds way better and is much more comfortable for the user which I think too. _________________ Andreas

FM synthese isn't that easy. The Dual Filter is sometimes puzzled, but anyway, it's a very good synth too. Clavia thinks of it the best they ever made... It only wasn't a best seller

That´s the way with very good products, they often aren´t bestsellers. I know that quite well, because I was an editor for a long time. Our bestselling books weren´t the best from a quality point of view and our best books from that point weren´t bestsellers ...
And thanks for your help Wout.
I sure will be back, if I have any problems ...
P.S.: The NordSoundManager works with XP! _________________ Andreas
