Here are some images of panels I finished last night. The modules are already built I just need to drill and mount at this point...
The first pic is the engraver working...

The format is Modcan A. The panels I get precut and mounting holes drilled from FPE. Then I engrave and drill.

i went to a local laser engraving place and they told me they wouldnt do aluminium as the laser had a oxidising effect on the alu. it kinda burnt my spirits as i thought laser engraving was the go.
do you find this at all?
the guy wouldnt even give it a try as he was so against the idea _________________ problemchild

Here's what the laser engraving business did for me. They used a special commercially available substrate to engrave. I chose a black-aluminium rather than black-white combination. There are quite a few different choices that the engraver offered me.

The engraver that I used was an Epilog Mini. Epilog provides instructions for engraving on aluminum. From what I know it is a chemical reaction with the dye. It has a very professional look, I do not believe it affects the longevity of the panel.
You can have resolutions upward of 600 DPI, this allows for extreme detail. This is an extremely inexpensive way of making "one-off" panels. All other methods I've looked into have been cost prohibitive for small runs.
Here is some more info on people using Epilog laser engravers on aluminum...

I have heard about a kind of paint that you spray on anodized aluminium and make it possible to use CO2-lasers to engrave. It was called something like "alumark" I think, found it on CNC-zone.com
dave; do you have any links to the manufacturer of the substrate you used? It must be coated with something similar to the spray I read about. |

Hi
Re: materials - not totally sure because it was supplied by the engraver. It's pretty common as a few engravers here were familiar with it and suspect it would be something like the black glossy with aluminum behind...Probably something like what is available here as AL 20-400S (Laser/Aluminum) http://www.laserstuff.ca/metal_anodized.htm

OMG. How have I not seen this before? That's in my top 5 DIY synths ever! It's super compact as far as large format is concerned, intuitive layouts and absolutely unique. L ve it.
How much did those panels cost you? _________________ " I went through quite a few trannies til I found one I liked" - Wild Zebra |

Thanks!!
The 2 panels were around 80 dollars Canadian each. Artwork was done in Illustrator.
