FYI - Nord just released USB driver v3 |
 |
|
...which works with the G2.
Not sure if they've actually fixed anything with the new release, apart from making it WHQL certified.

From the website:
This driver version is not compatible with the Electro 1 and 2, or the Modular G2.
So don't run out and install unless you are in an adventurous mood! |

I missed that!
I actually took the update for my Wave, but seems to work OK with the G2 so far!
Maybe they just mean it's not been fully tested with G2? _________________ OVNI Soundcloud Purusha Soundcloud |

Where do you see this statement? I see that the G2 is not listed on Clavia’s front page announcement and that the G2 software download page still only has the v2.16 driver, but I haven’t found where the new driver is declared incompatible. _________________ varice |

Are you sure that your G2 and Editor are actually using the new driver?
What computer OS are you using? 32 or 64 bit?
What version G2 OS and Editor? _________________ varice |

I'm on 64 bit Windows 7. Latest versions of everything.
Am pretty sure the driver the G2's using is the latest since the installer remover the old one and the G2 caused a driver install with the new one.
BTW - the "not compatible" message is on the same screen as the actual download link.
Edit: yes - it's definitely using v3 driver. Just checked. _________________ OVNI Soundcloud Purusha Soundcloud |

Thanks for the clarification.
So the v3 USB driver is declared incompatible, but appears to work for you. Interesting! _________________ varice |

Certainly looking that way so far...
But I can't say I know Nord's reasons for claiming incompatibility. Perhaps someone here could talk to someone in-the-know and clear it up? _________________ OVNI Soundcloud Purusha Soundcloud |

| I exchanged some email with the folks at Clavia, who told me that although the driver is officially not compatible, they have tried it and not found any problems. |

| I would've assumed that with the move to a single driver model, that Clavia opened the door to supporting all devices (at least the drivers) with each driver release. Maybe that's the intention, but Clavia doesn't seem to be doing the testing to make sure that holds true. |

Well, there seems nothing to base such an assumption on. It is not uncommon that new drivers work with older hardware (especially with something a supposedly standard as a USB driver) but unless specifically specced for and tested with said older hardware any manufacturer who says 'may work with...' risks calling down a heavenly load of opprobrium on their heads so safest to declare it as 'unsupported' rather than say 'it should work but we haven't tested it'. It is very costly to support a lot of legacy stuff in new software (and potentially compromises quality of drivers for new hardware) so once stuff gets past a certain age....

Two things that my assumption are based:
1.) Last year Clavia unified most of their products into a single USB driver.
2.) Clavia's design philosophy has always been to create quality instruments that last a lifetime (I wish I had the exact words they once used).
it doesn't cost much to support an older platform: Clavia does most things in-house, and I would assume they keep copies of their own instruments on hand.
So, I expect a lifetime of service out of my instrument. I expect that from Clavia. I think that's why many people buy their gear: it stands for quality, innovation, and endurance. |

Well, I'm not going to start a fight but what occurs to me is that re 1) I'm not sure that was a deliberate move and it certainly seemed a convenience rather than a policy but even so that doesn't imply anything other than unified support for *current* products (born out by the fact that this last release does not seem to support all USB-capable models) and re 2) that's fine on a hardware level (not that my G2 engine has many knobs, LCD's or keys) but a) who's lifetime and b) any lifetime for a software configured and driven system is limited by other rather key factors quite beyond their control such as a supported operating system and I'll bet a pig to a packet of chips that my G2 engine outlives any supported Windows which will drive it.
Jim
P.S. it can and often does cost a lot to support older stuff and it is not the cost of keeping the hardware around, its the additional development and testing time that is the major factor. |
