Subject description: questions on DIY drone commander like synth
Reply with quote  Mark this post and the followings unread

Hi mate,

I really like the sound that plays the drone commander. I would like to buy one but before spend money i want try to build one myself.

I already have dronelab, I like a lot but the sound is not as good as that of the drone commander.

The chain synthesis seems simple, but I am a real novice and I ask you some advice to make a similar unit.

What type of oscillators do you recommend (use drone square and tri)
oscillators are synchronized with each other, ll 'lfo waveform do not know what but I have a square. l 'lfo controls the filter and a multiplier that increases the rate exponentially.

any suggestions?
tnx

hi Urbanspaceman,

I've done a lot of research into drones lately and I too was a little dissapointed by the square and pulsewave drones. I've made a lot of them using the 40106(like the dronelab) but they just didn't hit the spot. The perfect drone IMHO is a smooth slowly changing waveform with as much harmonics as possible. I used 2 triangle oscillators and 2 triangle LFO's in mine:

I did design a very special filter for it, just a bare triangle drone will sound a lot different but at least a lot better then square.

I am planning on making a kit for the Organ Dronor, let me know if you're interested.

Hey!
Your organ dronor sounds good but different from drone commander.
I think the sound is too edgy than what I am searching.. perhaps an additional filter may help to soften and 'round' the drone.

or perhaps a different waveform .... with other modulation

unfortunately I can not help on this

A kit could be interesting. it all depends on cost.

congratulations, great job. Smile

Hi tjookum
I'm listening your Drone. Sounds very good... good low Frequencies
In these days I'm trying to build one drone using a 10106... but I don't like it very much, too much noisy and buzzzing ... I'm looking for FM...
I try to sync 2 osillators... I add a pseudo ring modulator... but I'm quite disappointed... the sound is it is too plane/flat...

But make oscillarors using 10106 is very simple and I think I could use some filter to round up the squere wave...

but... do you know how can I control a variable resistor with a LFO??? Idea
it could be interesting to make the sound slowly mooving automatically

feed the CV from the LFO into the base of a 2n3904, connect the Emitter to one side of the pot and the collector to the other side.

Hi Lorenzo.

inlifeindeath is correct, that should work. Another option is to go with vactrols(led/ldr combo) just place the ldr in the place of the variable resistor and use your signal to drive the LED.

here is a link to a page explaining passive filters:

they are incredibly simple and work surprisingly well.

How about an op-amp circuit.
I am new to design, but some of better noisemaker of old used them (gnome, audio artist)
Could also try a NN- schmidt tigger ic , schmidt tigger logic was invented to ensure precise logic, which could be harsh on some sounds
