"Terminated" could mean different things--looks like we will have to read all the details to find out (1) if they are revoking all licenses or (2) if they are basically allowing it to fall into public domain. If they are revoking all licenses, I suppose that anyone who created or even has mp3 files are in violation of revoked licenses (not sure if they can do that legally, though). This might mean that DRM might cause MP3 players to fail. Sad

However, if they are just basically saying they will no longer going to license the process/format, we don't have to rush to preserve our files before they no longer work.

Converting files from mp3 to any other compressed format would create additional artifacts. It's like making a tape of a tape, if anyone can remember that.

Given how MP3 is a defacto standard by now, this is probably just going to throw the floodgates open. APE, FLAC, Apple's various codecs, Ogg Vorbis... but people still use and talk about MP3's.

It will stay relevant. It's JPEG for audio. AAC is better for audio-video.
