The MicroTrack is a rugged high-fidelity mobile 2-channel digital recorder that records WAV and MP3 files to CompactFlash or microdrives—perfect for everything from professional field recording to corporate meetings, training, education and worship. Record via balanced line inputs or built-in high-fidelity microphone preamps complete with phantom power for studio-quality microphones. Connect MicroTrack to a PC or Mac via USB and simply drag and drop recordings to your computer for immediate editing or Web posting. Power derives from a lithium-ion battery, and the unit can recharge via the computer’s USB connection or USB power adapter. The MicroTrack combines quality beyond that of DAT recording with the convenience and cost-effectiveness of personal digital recorders for the ultimate solution in mobile recording.

Phantom power . not bad. This one might be cool for field recordings of trains and stuff.

The Edirol R-1 Portable 24-Bit Wave Recorder & Player is another nice one.

for completeness' sake the other contenders... the Tascam is supposed to be $999 street, which is insane considering how expensive their DAT recorders were. the sony for me falls into the nice but silly at the pricepoint ($2000) category.

sorry about the size of the images, next time I'll rescale them before posting.

RNP, I added some links to your post. Very cool stuff... I like the looks of the Sony. I agree, very expensive, but very cool looking.

cheers for the links!

personally I'd need to try out the preamps of all of them before really making a decision. if it's easier to take a nice Sound Devices preamp along then the m-audio recorder might fit the bill. but the tascam has a really nice price/performance ratio, especially if you're also into film. I'm really starting to imagine hearing the MD's compression artifacts these days... Very Happy

The Marantz has phantom power too, and XLR inputs to boot. There are lots of choices. Cool

And another one, no mp3 seemingly (although all these devices seem to have support for reflashing the firmware).

Not as interesting as this!!;

http://mysterycircuits.com/melloman/melloman.html

- from Mike Walters- who's on this list too!

Actually I had a similar idea to this some time ago- using Sony MD walkman's (walkmen?)- as I've always wanted an Optigan you see- but prevailing bills and rent to pay (and a nagging girlfriend!!) meant the project had to be pulled :(

It's funny you say that, but I bought a Minidisk (Sony UK edition MDS-JB930- ATRAC DSP type-R) instead of DAT because I couldn't tell any difference between the too. There are many glowing reviews of this MD deck (which is a bargain these days) on the internet- I recommend doing a Google search on it for the fun of it

I still prefer the sound of tape. The Studer/Revox kills anything digital off imo- it's just a pity that Quantegy have stopped making tape :(

Yes, this one is more interesting, but it deserves it's own topic. Hail Mike. Great project...

I'm not looking to cause any offence here, but aren't these ones rather sycophantic? Shocked

    From http://www.freesearch.co.uk/dictionary/sycophantic

sycophantic: adjective FORMAL DISAPPROVING (of a person or of behaviour) praising people in authority in a way that is not sincere, usually in order to get some advantage from them:
    - There was sycophantic laughter from the audience at every one of his terrible jokes.

No, I'm very sincere in my praise for Mike and this project. This emoticon, Hail the Master , may be a bit sarcastic but it's in the spirit of fun as in the movie Wayne's World - "we're not worthy Hail the Master Hail the Master Hail the Master"

Some people dislike emoticons (that is what they are called - icons to express emotion). I think they are cool and give self expression another dimension on the forum. If you don't care for them, don't use them.

I agree! This would solve many of my outdoor hassles. In my case very cool since for the first time I would be able to record surround soundscapes, which I had never been able to do so far!
