NEW THEREMIN MUSIC

...Hmmm...is it music...I guess listeners will have to decide. It FELT like music when we were playing it.

Here's the first of what we're hoping will be a collection of improvised music for piano and/or keyboard and theremin.

I had the good fortune to get together with someone that everybody on this site knows: he's a piano and keyboard and synth AND BANJO playing maestro: Howard Moscovitz.

Improvisation usually gets a bad rap, too easily dismissable as musicians just noodling around. It’s a bit of a tightrope walk most of the time. Sometimes it can seem formless, others structured and melodic. There’s also a certain degree of honesty involved: once you’ve created a piece, is it really worth listening to? You, dear listeners, will determine that. Howard and I approached playing freeform out of a mutual respect for one another’s music and out of the desire to see what was possible. As we spent the day exploring, the “compositions” increasingly became startling exercises in listening; listening to our inner impulses, and really listening to one another. Some of the work emerged very melodic, while Divertimento began as something very different. It’s one of the best examples of the give and take we developed, as one player’s idea was picked up by the other, ideas being traded back and forth, ebb and flow. It is alternately freeform and formal, ranging from somber to silly, too. Finally, it features a quality of the theremin that’s rarely exploited: a sort of conversational inflection that carries with it almost human expressiveness; you’ll hear it very early on in the piece.

We've started getting together and the attached piece is one of the little creatures we brought to life.
