G2 as effect processor? |
 |
|
Hey,
I'm considering buying a G2 engine to run my MPC3000 through it. How is it as an effect/modulation tool? And what about sequencing the MPC to create unusual patterns?
Would you recommend getting one?
Thanks |

In my opinion the G2 is the best modular hardware FX processor ever built, only surpassed by Eventide in terms of flexibility and sound quality. However it is far easier to use, and alot(!) cheaper than those.
There are a few caveats though. If you are looking for very high studio quality reverb, the G2 might disappoint you. The reverb module isn't exactly bad, but not stellar either. While I have no hesitations to use it live or as a subtle adjunct, I have my reservations about using it prominently in a professional mix.
Also, there has been some discussion about the quality of the AD and DA converters. These discussions seem to have a subjective component to them, with opinions on both sides. Personally I find the converters fine.

Different kinds of pattern generators -straightforward, algorithmic, chaotic, whatever- in conjunction with being able to send MIDI note and controller information from those, is an area were the G2 is truly unmatched by any other hardware system.

For the applications you described -absolutely. |

I'd say that's an ok price, considering the difficulties people have in finding engines at all.

As Tim alluded to, I wouldn't use the G2 as say, a replacement for a dedicated compressor or EQ, or even studio quality reverbs, BUT, if you wanted to get some interesting effects by way of modulation, or sequenced effects, or midi-automated effects, yeah, the G2 is perfect for that.
The out of box effects are there more out of convenience than actual usability, but the kind of stuff you can make is incredible. Someone on this board made a looper and delay-based "stutter" effects with just the G2... You can make all kinds of bit crushers and distortions...
Anyways I could do this all day, yeah, so long as you expect to have to make most of your own effects, I'd go for it... _________________ Studio:

David Torn uses a G2 to convert nonrhythmic loops coming out of his customized Lexicon looper (PCM 42 I think) into rhythmic ones.
Definitely a nice creative sound processing tool, as long as you don't expect it to do better reverb than a high end Lexicon box, better delays than a high end tc electronic, etc. _________________ Current and recent work on Soundcloud
