A nice and easy compressor to DIY? |
 |
|
I don´t see compressors in the typical DIY kits/ markets (Thonk, Modular addict, etc)
Why?
Is there any nice and easy compressor building or PCB to recommend?. Ideally with no valves or esoteric components.
I´d like to go for a 1176 but that toroid transformer seems expensive AF. Could it be replaced with other more economical option? |

What is your goal?
Most studio projects require specific and often expensive parts and/or are more complex builds with a lot of components.
There are a few modular specific kits/ PCB's and those usually are simpler.
Even simpler are diy guitar pedals of which there are also some compressor projects, usually more "colourful" (ie. more distortion) |

People seem to like the Hairball kits, but I don't know how much better they are than a production compressor in the same price range. |

I guess the goal is getting something good sounding, easy to DIY, funny to DIY eurorackable and economical. But Im open to change this variables if something caches my eye.
After reading quite a bit on the 1176 the idea gets more seductive the more I read. Maybe I should try with a common transformer or even DIY the trafo itself. Will see |

What are the differences between studio compressors, and guitar pedal compressors? |

Input/output impedances and levels. Signal-to-noise ratio needs to be a lot higher in studio equipment. Studio equipment needs to be able to drive lines and needs a balanced output.
Now when you build for synth, you have one big advantage: high signal levels, no need for balanced circuits, and easy input impedance. _________________ Weblog! |

By the way, it´s not DIY but Klark Teknik is cloning all the classic compressors at 200-300€ each (1176, LA2A and Pultec EQP-1A)
In stock in Thomann and your fav music shops
I haven´t see at audio comparatives yet, but Klark use to have top notch qualities, so I guess It doesn´t make sense anymore to DIY it. At least you want it, sure |
