OK, Just got the gen 1 micro mod.

I am an experienced synthesist and studio owner but for some reason I cannot get the MIDI setup working in the OSX beta editor. I've tried 2 different USB midi ports. There isn't even an error message. It just says "Looking" and then "Still Looking" and never stops looking. I assume the PC IN port goes to the MIDI IN of my interface. I can't figure it out.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Micah

OS X? Which version? Which mac? Which midi interface?

I am using a dedicated mac for the editor app and a battered midisport thingie for midi. I don´t think I can easily debug this one. I guess you have already checked the cables and whatnot?

yeah, i've checked all the cabling, switched it etc. also looked for other posts with the same problem.

I also tried a Midisport. Does the Midi Setup in the editor usually give a notification if things aren't set up properly? I mean, it just keeps on searching for it.

Searching, that;s what it does when it can't finf the synth, and searching stops when it found it. Not very informative indeed.

Did you check the midi ports to be working for other purposes ?

Do you have a sequencer program installed maybe that claims all midi ports it can find ?

yeah, i hooked it up to logic and the MIDI IN was working fine - I was able to play the patches. Is the PC IN/OUT like a regular MIDI port? I assume I cannot hook the editor up to the MIDI ports on the Micro Mod but only to the PC in/out. Right?

All My MIDI ports work fine. Very Strange.... and frustrating

Assumption correct, can feel your frustration, it can work, it can be a long search sometimes though, on a PC as well. There is http://nm-archives.electro-music.com/010_NordModular/018_FAQ/ but it has no OSX section on connection trouble.

I'm wondering if there is a problem with them PC IN/OUT ports. Is there any way to check these without using the editor?

Maybe .. when you have a software that can act like a midi spy. I'm not 100% sure but I think the MM sends out some sysex repeatedly to it's PC port to invite a conection with the editor. With some effort I think I could come up with a sysex command that you could send to the MM to which it should reply then.

For a PC midi-ox would be a good program, but for the Mac I wouldn't know.

yeah, you sure are right. plugging the PC out into the MIDI in port delivers a constant MIDI led.

I wonder, is there a way to factory reset the micro? Or something? Man, I cannot figure this out Confused

I don't think the problem is with the micro actually ... but it would be best to check that of course ... do you have another computer somewhere to try, maybe a friend or a neighbour ?

Let me guess....You had the micro plugged into to like, Port 7 on the midisport and didn't realize you had to have it on one of the first 4 ports? This is what I did the first time around and nearly went mad.

Hey- you're not the first one to get the ins&outs confused.
This is the reason I have my cables color coded- particularly on the Nord Modular

When I had a NM1, I used to always confuse PC IN and PC OUT. It is not obvious what that means. I'm always confused anyhow, so the NM1 made me feel quite comfortable. Confused

My money is on Micah discovering a bad MIDI cable after all.

Of course my opinion is colored by my own very recent experience. I learned that if you buy MIDI cables in pairs so that they are attached to each other, one of them can still go bad while the other one still works! Doh!

Hmm.. Question Shocked
This is weird. I dunno. I am using a G4 just for the editor app. I am not running any other midi stuff on it at all. I have never actually tried running he editor from the main DAW.
