Ok, maybe it's a stretch. But it be great to have the G2 take control over Mackie Control compatible software. Knobs do their thing, and the display reflects what the software intends. Full control of software (including programs like Cubase, Logic, and Ableton Live!).

I don't know the Mackie Control Protocol, but it seems to me that the problem is not with the G2, but these programs that don't use standard MIDI commands for software control. I have a MOTU 828MKII and it uses the MCP to control the levels of the four internal mixers. Finej if you have a Mackie controller, but it doesn't respond to MIDI. What a crock. Do we need one protocol to play musicical notes and another one to start and stop a program? Crying or Very sad

What we need it a MIDI to MCP converter program.

From what I understand, the MCP compatible systems use the MIDI protocol, but in specific ways that combine CC messeges and sysex. Abunch of it has to do with closed-loop control: Messeges sent require feedback, such as "Hey I press this button" replied by "ok, got it, you can turn on your led!". It also supposedly helps with motorized faders.

However, I can't find any documentation on it through the web. It'd be nice to have this since all MCP devices talk the same languages (ie- you don't have to reset your MIDI CC#'s and channels, it's all pre-configured). As such, you connect your G2 to your computer, and can take command of MANY software packages instantly -- transport controls, track arming & faders, even plug-ins.

However, it'd be even nicer if there was some software that allowed VST plug-ins to talk to the G2, so that the LCD's could be used to their full potential with minimum programing. The Korg Control49 can do this with some software, and the new NI KORE is another attempt at the same thing.

Guess what?? No sysex is required for the Mackie protocol. Check this out:

Shocked Shocked Shocked

Found that while browsing the Ableton forums, here: http://www.ableton.com/forum/topic-30237.html and http://www.ableton.com/forum/topic-26545.html

Anyone care to tackle this one? I don't have the g2key yet, so any attempt would be annoying to debug.

More info: As the names of the channels would not be able to be updated or displayed, you could use the BCFview software to do a virtual LCD on your computer screen. Very Happy

This is great info but I cant figure out how to control mixer faders in for an example Live. Mackie Control protocol uses "Pitch wheel" Controllers on different channels for this data. All other functions on a Mackie Control is sent by either MIDI note numbers or MIDI CC values.
I think we need a "Pitch Wheel value send" Module. (!?)
What differs Pitch wheel data from Midi CCs?
Has anyone figured this out?

I don't know anything about the Mackie Control Protocol but the G2 does not have a pitch bend send module. The pitch bend command in midi is a signed 7 or optionally 14 bit command. I think that Clavia only uses 7 bits for it's internal pitch stick.
