Mellotron_G2 Subject description: Early 70s Pad |
|
|
I needed a mellotron to be able to play progressive rock from the early 70s so I built this synthetic one. I combined Jim Johnson's fine "Mellochoir" patch with a "Symphony" patch and made modifications such as adding another choir voice and a compressor. If you play the keyboard softly, you only hear the choir voices. I have attached a mp3 file of the patch playing brief fragments of the mellotron-rich songs "In the Court of the Crimson King" and "Knights in White Satin".
Variation 1: Mellotron
Variation 2: Voices Only
Variation 3: Orchestra only
Variation 4: Why didn't they tell us about them
Hope you like it.
Gregory

Sounds very King Crimson to me, there might be a tiny but too much resonance that makes it sound a littlle glass like - otoh my records are pretty worn out so I can't really tell _________________ Jan

I don´t think it sounds much like any of the mellotron tape sets I know of, but it is a wonderful patch! Great work!
A great alternative to a real Mellotron is the M-Tron ( http://www.gmediamusic.com/gforce/m-tron/M-Tron.html ). _________________ A Charity Pantomime in aid of Paranoid Schizophrenics descended into chaos yesterday when someone shouted, "He's behind you!"

Yes it doesn't sound like a mellotron to me either- but great work nevertheless
I know Chet Singer once did a wonderful patch for the Nord Modular 1 that sounded to my ears almost exactly like mellotron flutes.
Don't overlook the Vako Orchestron/ Mattel Optigan either. There is a CD rom of it available HERE and the main site THERE
There's some brilliant 'covers' on that site including "4 Optigans"- as take of '4 Organs' by Steve Reich, and "Powerhouse" by Raymond Scott.
The CD-rom is quite pricey- but very much worth it |

Thanks for your kind comments and that BBC radio link to the Mellotron History program. It was a lot of fun to listen to the program, especially to the Moody Blues keyboardist talking about how he used the tape pitch knob to get the swirling 60s psychedelic sound on the mellotron. The pitch stick on the Clavia G2 seems to be able to accomplish some of that formerly "chemically-assisted" effect.
I'll look at reducing the resonance a bit to see if I can make the sound warmer. The M-audio midi software version of the mellotron is what spurred me on to try to make one on my G2X. There are some excellent flute patches for the G2 that can be used to mimic the mellotron's flute but none that I could find that combined choir voices with detuned strings, so I made mine. |

You may like to check out my Solina patch I did for the Nord Micromodular. I managed to squeeze 6 note polyphony from that. You'll find them under the file named 'terryfunken' |
