try typing

./nm2g2

by itself

Also copy and paste the output of that into your next reply

IDLE 1.2
>>> ./nm2g2
SyntaxError: invalid syntax
>>>

this to me

./nm2g2 testseq.pch

I see the problem IDLE is being invoked insead of the python interpreter.

IDLE is an editor/IDE for developing Python scripts. You don't need this to run the script. This is a minor system configuration issue. I don't have a MAC.

Send a PM to 3phase- I think he's an OSX user. Ask him how he got around this problem, then post the reply (if it works for you) here, so others can benefit from it. We need to get qfingers to add some readme files for OSX.

Here is Talkbox02.pch, the other three wont convert probably because they give errors when loading into the NM classic editor.

Um, these are realy basic patches, take at most a couple of minutes each to convert by hand.

What's up?

BTW I am on XP Pro not mac so cant help with your problems.

You might want to read back through all this thread history.
This toool isn't finished yet, and it's likely some patches will not sound how you expect them to, until the tool is finished

3phase and I have found many bugs and updated many models. We are finishing up now and should have a release soon. I'm hoping to have it done in a couple of days. It took longer because there were tricky some problems to solve and alot of models needed updating.

Thankyou so much my friend!
Tried doing by hand, but got stuck on a few of the different settings on the new modules..
Couldn't get them to sound the same.

The converter only handles version 3 or greater patches. Was there a problem with the converter? It should have handled this easily.

Hehehe. I don't blame you.
I put in almost 20 hours at my job last weekend. I should be having a pint myself.

Ok, so this is how I'm "trying" to convert them..

I installed python for OSX.
I open the g2tools folder which is filled with a build sub-folder, a nord sub-folder, lots of test.pch's and 8 .py files.
I place the patch I want to convert in this main folder.
I open the nm2g2.py file and IDLE pops up. There are 2 windows. One has heaps of text in it and the other one is called python shell.
It says,

IDLE 1.2
>>>

There I entered ./nm2g2.py then the patch name "talkbox02.pch" and hit enter.
Then I get this response...
SyntaxError: invalid syntax.

What is it i'm doing wrong..?
Can someone guide me through this please?

TDLE is just the editor...so it is ok that it says syntax wrong...

But you have phyton running now...

on my machine i just need to doubble click on the nm2g2.py application file that is within the folder..
than a command window pops up

there i type ./nm2g2.py name.pch

and enter and it starts the conversion...

In the beginning i had to use the IDLE editor to change the first line of the nm2g2.py to the location of the phyton libs...

what can be found with the "which phyton" command in the terminal window of os x...

but..i didnt had to do that anymore in the later updates...

So i dont know if the system somehow remembered this or if the applikation got optimized so that is not necessary anymore...

Its a bit digging in the dark when you are not used to this unix type of things..as me... but...
once its running it works like a charm...

the next update that is comming soon also features a function where you can convert whole folders..

So just keep trying... maybe there is an app in your phyton folder that is called phyton launcher..you could try that on nm2g2.py

And..
i placed my G2ools folder direct on the main partition...not in the programs folder...

I dont know if that is necessary but i had permission problems when i had it in the program folder...

Didnt had much time to check it out..and didnt wanted to change anything while i am still on the bug hunt...

Its very complex to get the convertion running on all patches perfect because any little bug or misstranslation can be significant in a specivic patch while 100 others just convert fine and you dont get the idea that something can go wrong...

All this grey signal stuff is really tricky and will probably need some more time to get it sorted out..
but the upcoming update allready can handle many situations that appeard untranslateable for me a while ago...

It started to become better than my hand conversion trys because it adjusts much more details than you can be aware of in a hand conversion.

many modules on the Nm1 work slightly or very differnt than the similar ones on the G2...

I understand now why my handconversions never sounded wright...
The converter is doing a much better job allready than i thought it would be possible...

i followed your instructions to a 'T'

the first line of all this:

Posted Image, might have been reduced in size. Click Image to view fullscreen.

was changed from whatever it was to:

/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/Current/bin/python

which is what i got when typing 'which python' in terminal.

BUT

in the python shell - this is what i get:

Posted Image, might have been reduced in size. Click Image to view fullscreen.

ugh. this is awesome that we have this and frustrating that it doesn't work. a gui would be so freakin' nice if someone could whip one up in Max or something. otherwise - we (Mac OSX users) need a better tutuorial...

could you try not putting the ./ in there?

I am not a unix user but isn't ./ just a shorthand for the current directory, which is the default anyway?

again..this thing is not run from the editor.. (IDLE)

i went thru all this trouble aswell but eventually i got it working...
maybe i ve my routines to finding my way around in computers but that is mainly based on keep trying than any unix knowledge...

It got working for me after i had g2ools removed from the program folder... in the main directory. And that dont necessaryli means that this is necessary..that was just the chronologic order

than i started IDLE changed the header...
nothing happen... same as the state you are in... I supposed that this thing wasnt ment to work from the editor...

I used the Phyton Launcher again...or tried to assign the phyton launcher to the nm2g2.py file...with the apple/I infobox...

afterwards all .py files got the phyton logo...

i double clicked on nm2g2.py
a command window popped up..
i was abel to convert patches with the
./nm2g2.py command...

There is nothing more i can tell about it...
but maybe the assigning of phyton launcher did it???

which phyton you have installed? I got Mac Phyton 2.4

ok - i am using MacPython 2.5.

i did what you said and did the 'Get Info' and assigned the nm2g2.py file to be opened with Python Launcher instead of IDLE.

but now when i double click the 'nm2g2.py' file it opens up two Terminal windows - one of which says this (and i can't type anything into it:

Last login: Sat Jan 20 01:40:06 on ttyp1

Hyde:~ Hyde$ cd '/Users/Hyde/Desktop/g2ools-1.0/' && '/usr/local/bin/pythonw' '/Users/Hyde/Desktop/g2ools-1.0/nm2g2.py' && echo Exit status: $? && exit 1
Exit status: 0
logout
[Process completed]

and the other one is just an empty Terminal window.

Instead of double clicking- why not just open a command window in the directory where g2ools are, and just run it from there?

type which python
and past the results into the reply to this message

another thing you can try is

once you find out where the python interpreter is

invoke it using the full path to it as in
/pathname/subdir1/python ./nm2g2 mypatch.pch

There is apparently some issue on OSX where the IDE is being invoked instead of the python interpreter. This should be easy to fix- it's a system configuration issue.
Do you know how to change program associations?
We need to change the association with IDLE, and replace it with the python interpreter. Try posting a message in a mac users forum- asko how to change program associations.

Would you try this?
Open a cmd prompt window- so you can enter cmds, but cd into the directory where g2ools is installed

then try invoking the python interpreter like this (but subsitute a real patchname)

/usr/local/bin/pythonw ./nm2g2.py patchname.pch

or try this

/usr/local/bin/python ./nm2g2.py patchname.pch
(without the 'w' on the end of python)

if that doesn't work type

ls -asl /usr/local/bin/pythonw

and paste the output inot your reply

is there a file called python as well as pythonw in /usr/local/bin ?

On windows, pythonw will launch a gui app, without the console window.
On osx there may be slightly different implications
