You should give spinsanity.com a perusement sometime as well.

nice blog.
and for some interesting and relatively unbiased journalism check out
http://www.alternet.org
I like their style. They tend to steer clear of alarmism and conjecture and I find they often address issues which are very relevant and important but less exciting than those stories covered by libertythink et al. Although I will always have a soft spot for radical journalism. I think it serves a positive purpose by getting people to question mainstream media. |

Regarding the Patriot Act 2, check out Section 313
http://www.pbs.org/now/politics/patriot2-hi.pdf
"SECTION 313 provides liability protection for businesses, especially big businesses that spy on their customers for Homeland Security, violating their privacy agreements. It goes on to say that these are all preventative measures – has anyone seen Minority Report? This is the access hub for the Total Information Awareness Network."
Interesting indeed. _________________ ∆ Cyx ∆

Perhaps I'm just feeling overly optimistic today but I doubt this legislation will pass. The Pat1 probably would not have passed if it wasn't done with haste in the wake of destruction and without any media attention. Already, portions of Pat1 are being repealed at state level and even some cities have passed legislation criminalizing the use of Pat1.
With the amount of money going to defense, I'm much more worried about black ops than legislation. Get a huge group of people together with a lot of power and the sense that they have a license to use it and trouble will ensue. It's no coincedence that the neoconservatives are students of Leo Strauss who taught that there is a higher race of people that must watch over the rest and treat them like little children that should (according to judeo-christian values) be watched, protected and punished. The whole attitude of this sneaking fascism is that power is not only a license to control but also wisdom to know when it's necessary. This is, of course, complete bullshit. Everyone knows that just bebcause you have a gun doesn't mean you know how or when to use it.

It was passed December 13th, 2003, while the world was focused on Saddam Hussein's magical "capture."

So... section 313 allows for corporate precogs? I imagine this is the start of a new diretion on big business. Willl the state pay for expenses when businesses do this kind of spying? Will it then be profitable to develop current customer tracking/customer support schemes in order to sell intelligence to the state? _________________ A Charity Pantomime in aid of Paranoid Schizophrenics descended into chaos yesterday when someone shouted, "He's behind you!"

Not exactly. What it allows for is the collection of data from companies by the government, allowing for "all encompassing" datasets, be they employees or whatever. Presumably, this could mean activity logs from people's ISPs could be used to determine if a person is engaging in threatening activities online, like visiting subversive websites. Checking out subversive literiture at libraries. Renting subversive videos and DVDs. Dont forget, the original Patriot Act already allows for sneak-and-peak searches, under suspicion of engaging in any activity that "endangers life" and breaks federal law. This is a complete violation of the 4th (Illegal search and seizure) and 5th (self-incrimination) amendments in the Bill of Rights.
In addition to this, posse comitatus is virtually gone now, so it is presumable that the US military could be the law enforcers engaging in this activity. _________________ ∆ Cyx ∆

Amusing thought... instead of bringing democracy to Cuba, the current junta makes the USA rather more like Cuba? Excellent! A few more laws of this kind and you will have a haven for russians missing the good old days of the omnipotent Party. A demon plan! Hey... this might even bring peace to Korea at last: Move the nation of North Korea to Nebraska! Hmm.. and send all lesbians and subversive elements to area previosly known as North Korea? And .. is Pol Pot really dead? _________________ A Charity Pantomime in aid of Paranoid Schizophrenics descended into chaos yesterday when someone shouted, "He's behind you!"

As soon as is practical, America will be used as the predatory "bad cop" to go in and decimate smaller nations and destroy their infrastructure (assuming they have one) so that when they withdraw to prepare for the next hit, the wonderful "good cop" UN can roll in and save the day, and the IMF and the World Bank can do to them what Visa and Mastercard and the like have done to the American people.
It's only a matter of time before we start "developing" pretexts for the usurpation of power from the nations on our hit list, nations like Afghanistan and Iraq and Syr...

Or a pistol and a copy of the Constitution (not that it seems to be of much use to the individual anymore). Kerry, anti-Bush anti-oppression Kerry, incidentally, voted for the Patriot Act. Does anyone really expect him to work to have legislation he approved repealed?
My advise to everyone is to, at the very least, become intimately familiar with the Constitution, and what it's dictates mean, especially the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 8th, and as a people, the 10th amendments. Know and understand what they are rescinding here. _________________ ∆ Cyx ∆
