Hi Tim,
Nice to read somebody from France, 'cause there aren't many on these boards.
And the Hammond Novachord, indeed, a wonderful instrument, which was too advanced in its time.

Hi Wout,
Just some further information. There is a wonderful site concerning the novachord, with several samples btw. :
http://www.discretesynthesizers.com/nova/intro.htm
Concerning the patch: one can come very close to the original novachord sounds tmo, just by tweaking the parameters on the parameter pages.
Especially the E1-1 (fasemod) and E1-3 (dry/wet level), the Vibrato on E1-4, the second vibrato with the modwheel, and the first envelope are very important.
(the second envelope is mainly to have the slow increment in soundvolume as it was ment to be in the novachord)
There are two vibratos: the one that is on the modwheel is independent and the first one on the E1 page is doing a different pitch, and effects the amount of fase modulation. therefor, it works less well if the fasemodulation is set to a very high or very low level, but it sounds very nice. The novachord had two different vibratos too, btw.
I made a little mistake in the delay, so i uploaded a new V1.0.4 that is corrected.
Hope to see you in Belgium, we can speak dutch there...

I know that one, although the author edited a lot concerning the restoration.
In the collection of the museum in The Hague there is a Novochord, which makes sound (at least, it did about 15 years ago but it's not to be played, because the tuning was terrible. Each 30 minutes technicians had to re-tune the instrument, due to the circumstances of the moment. The instrument in the collection belonged to the CBS studio's in New York and the documentation is also here (schemes, manual, special songbook !! and all the notes done by above technicians - just fun to read). I want to publish on the net, but there are troubles about copy rights... Who made the notes!!!
BTW the novochord is in display now at the Boerhave museum in Leiden, so not in The Hague, at the moment. There is a nice exposition about sound and a wonderful demonstratin about Wave Field Synthese (june 15)

Wout,
On one of the pictures of that restoration site, you see a metal plate with some patent numbers on it. You can trace those patents in the american patent database (on line and for free), and see some of the basic patents used to create the machine.
I am not so sure that the replacement of the audio-output section in the restorated novachord was a good idea, as it seems to have become a quite different sounding machine.
Also, replacing some thousand condensators and so many valves without being able to use the original parts could have changed somewhat the original character. But the project was huge and so was the courage of the fellow who did it, and the sounds although maybe somewhat different are fascinating.
If you downloaded V1.0.3 btw, the delaye was accidently set wrong, (you hear the delay and not the original timed sound, as they are tuned 100% wet, and so in all presets), so better take the 1.0.4
Just download this one, and try to do the same with the patch, itcan be done - tweak the E page.

Cool to see this patch here
Since I saw the restauration project page about 1.5 years ago, I've been
utterly in love with the sound that instrument makes... it's the most
balanced 'string-pad' (don't know how to describe it differently) I've ever
heard.
It's one of those sounds that I'd use over and over again, like the 666
patch in my OB Matrix 1000 that I have to be carefull with not to overuse...
All across the spectrum the Novachord sounds so beautifull, no other
synthesizer I've ever heard comes even close!
I downloaded those demo mp3's from that site, and still do listen to them
at least on a weekly basis...
BTW, thanks for posting that patch, it's not a bad emulation of the sound at all!
And congrats with your G2, all I can say is that you'll love it
Regards,

Oh, i hoped the G2X would come close...
Thanks for your kind comment, and if you have modifications or suggestions to improve it, it is very welcome.
As you see, the first post was a lot older, and my G2 is not so new anymore (nearly a whole year old!). It is a marvelous synth, it amazes me what some of the people here are doing with it, from baby babble to drones and further to the superb sounding Voyager 1TC and all those hundreds of other patches.
