hard time deciding which rack to get |
 |
|
I'm building a eurorack modular and the most difficult decision for me is which rack/case to get.
main Modules I am getting: cwejman vco and adsr, plan b vco and filter, livewire freakenstiner, doepfer spring reverb, analog solutions trigger sequencer.
I'm leaning heavily twords analogue systems to fill out the rest of the modules such as multiples/vcas/s&h/etc. I like Asys because they seem to be of generally better quality than doepfer and most ASol modules.
The problem is that ASys bus plugs are different format than doepfer style (cwejman/planb/livewire). If I was getting all doepfer style modules i would DEFINETLY go for the A-100 suitcase. I want to gig with this system. Problem with the suitcase is that i have to buy a $20 adapter for every ASys module I have, and that will come out to about $120 extra at least. The ASys racks have good reviews and have ASys AND doepfer sockets. Problem with that option is that it's a rack and not a practical portable unit on its own. I've looked in to SKB and Gator mobile rack cases and none of them are as appealing as the doepfer suitcase, they all look like they were made for mixers, not synth instruments.
So this is my predicament. Any ideas? Building a custom case seems like too much work right now. |

You might want to check out this ebay store front:
http://stores.ebay.com/The-Case-Store
They have a large selection of designs for rack cases. They have nice looking 6U cases in blue, red, even camouflage, besides, of course, black. They also have a number of 6U shallow effects rack cases which should probably go better with the short depth of an ASys rack. Just go to the store front, type in "6 space" and it will limit your list. They even have 12 space cases if you're feeling particularly adventurous.
As for me, I went for the sturdiness, sleek design, lifetime repair guarantee of an SKB Roto rack for my stuff. But it is way too deep for what's going in there. Oh well. Compromises, compromises... |

| I'm afraid I haven't seen these cases in the flesh so I can't comment on their construction. I'm pretty sceptical of Doepfer cases since they cost the same as their rack mount without a case. Like I said, I went for SKB, opting for rugged, even if it's too deep for my needs. |

| AH doesn't carry analogue systems racks. I don't think I should bother them with questions about products they don't have |

Surely you're talking about cases for racks, not racks to house modules..? |

he is talking about cases to house racks.
I don't like any of these portable cases. The bulky look of the plastic, while durable, is not appealing to me. I will probabbly go for the suitcase and pay the extra $150 or so to get adapters... |

| z_ecoustics, the Analogue Systems racks I have (RS10 and RS15) are about 18cm deep. |

EDIT: Oops! Here we go again. The question was about Analogue Systems, not Analogue Solutions.

Well, it seems like most of your main modules all have Doepfer-styler power connectors. Also, the Doepfer suitcase can supply more power than the equivalent ASys rack (1200 ma vs 800 ma). Given how many companies are offering things in Doepfer format, I would optimize for them, and treat ASys as the exception.
Have you contacted ASys to see if they will sell you a distribution board to put into a Doepfer case? You will have to get some sort of a power distribution board one way or another, no?
If you do decide to go with the ASys case, Plan B makes a power distribution board that accepts either Doepfer or ASys input connections, and has Dopfer outputs:
