Hello fellow Lords of the modular. I am trying to patch up a dynamics-preserving distortion similar to the design of TS-808-based TS-303 - http://www.analoguerenaissance.com/TS303/release%20notes.html ...

I am kind of thick when it comes to logic modules and such though, so I haven't really come up with a wave to rectify a signal. I understand there is a module for this on the G2, but how would one go about to build one in a NM1?

You could roll your own using a compare to level module, an inverter and a cross fader. When the level >= 0 the cross fader should pass the original value and when the level < 0 it should feed through the inverted signal. That would be a full wave rectifier, for half wave rectification leave out the inverter, the output signal will then be zero for negative input signals.

But there is a module for it, 7th from left on the audio tab, named diode Very Happy

Ah! Of course! I tried it out before, but should have looked at the signal in my oscilloscope. Or perhaps read up better on the functions of modules Smile

Thanks for the help. I've been lurking on electro-music for a while, nice atmosphere and general spirit of information sharing.

So, how would one go about doing a divider to get a signal which is the difference between the signal from amplitude extractor 1 & 2?

Could this possibly work? My abstract isn't the best Smile

a clean signal is processed by rectifier 1 & a distorted signal by rectifier 2. These in turn send the signal to env follower 1 & 2 to extract amplitude ... these signals are sent to a comparator.
when A is larger than B a trig is sent to crossfader which controls the level of the main signal. the signal from the crossfader is then added to a non-crossfader controlled version of the signal, thus adding the dynamics that are lost in the distortion section .. hm, I am not explaining this very well I think. Perhaps I'll just make a screenshot...

I should have looked at your first post better - especially at the image
... that makes things clearer.

Actually there is no need for the rectifiers as the envelope follower will
do both rectification and follow.

For the analog divider there was a post on the NM mailing list, see
here.
Two patches were attached to that mail but they seem to not be
retrievable, and they are not in the NM patch archive either. I'll attach the divide.pch here
- it was made by Mike Estlick.

Hope this helps.
