My DIY drum machine Subject description: finally finished it |
|
|
Hi folks. I wanted to share a project I just finished. Its a drum box containing the following,
TR808 kick and snare
Thomas Henry's UD1 Drum Voice
CGS Dual Drum
CGS Dual Chime
CGS Cynare
The sequencer is a modified circuit by Blacet. "The Voltage Controlled Clock with event Generator". Sheesh, great name!
http://www.cyndustries.com/synapse/synapse.cfm?pc=59&folder=jan1978&pic=45
Basically, its a gate sequencer with a set of eight switches for each drum sound. I spent way too much time building this thing. Now its time to make some tunes!
I made a few video demos today, check them out.

Very nice. The sound is reminiscent of a Roland CR78. I like it. _________________ Garret: It's so retro.
EGM: What does retro mean to you?
Parker: Like, old and outdated.

great job!
good choice with the Blacet clock, it was the heart of my old modular (now in storage). you should get some nice beats messing with those switches. |

Wow! Great to see someone having built a 'drum machine'! Nice timbres in your percussion sounds as well!
I'm JUST around the corner now, of starting design for my 1st 'drum machine'. It'll be a controller only, as the rest of my synth. will provide the palettes for drum sounds. (Including 1 1/2 Cynares).
Did you use PC mount slide switches? I'm now, looking for a source, as I only have wire mount ones. |

You know it kinda does sound like a CR78. Maybe its the Cynare that has that sound. I forgot to mention that I modified the Blacet design. I used the clock from the CGS Digital Noise, and I used the clock input from the CGS ASR. I added five more sets of switches too.
Instead of the 4013, I built eight CGS gate to trigger converters. The switches I used are pcb mount. The sequencer works great, though you have to understand how the switches work or you will set off a drum sound and it will be off time. You probably heard it in some of my demos.
There are a few things that still need to be ironed out, but for the most part its working.
Thanks guys, for the good word!

Well I did a lot of pushing and rushing to get this done before school started again. This has taken me a huge amount of time to build. I didn't realize how much work this was going to take. If I had better tools, I would have finished sooner.
I just finished jamming, and its so much fun! It was worth all the effort I put into building it.

GREAT! I would love to get a few of Marc Brailles ds7 or ds8 circuits together with a clock circuit like this and blast away! Drum machine DYI is kinda sparse, so your project is Quite inspiring! |

I had to modify the 808 sounds to accept triggers, but that was it. The other modules already have trigger conditioners built in. Unfortunately I don't remember what the jacks are, but I do have a drawing of everything somewhere. I really need to label everything, I just never got around to doing it since its a huge pain. _________________ Check out my music |

I built the, "Trigger conditioner with status indicator" from Thomas Henry's, "Electronic Drum Cookbook". I built two onto a protoboard and wired each to the 808 drum modules. Get that book its excellent, it helped me in building my drum box. The trigger is coming from my MFB drum sequencer, I don't use the Blacet clock thing any more since its not working, and I don't have time to troubleshoot it.

where did you get those cool switches?
great work |
Thanks. Those switches are Mountain brand pcb-mount SPDT slide switches. They're $0.36 ea, cheaper if you buy 50+. Mouser part number: 10SP001
here's another:
