Nord Modular G2 + Cubase SX3 + Audophile 2496 (Help!) Subject description: Need help! |

Hi all.
I have a question here if you don’t mind.
I bought Nord Modular G2 Engine and … before that I never used hard synth with Cubase.
How to connect Nord to Cubase SX3?
I don’t understand how to make busses in Cubase?
For example:
I create 4 midi channels, every midi channel has his own Nord instrument.
But how to record them in Cubase? Not midi, audio!
I noticed that every time when I work in Cubase I have to open Editor and make marks on 4 chanels to hear sound on all 4 tracks in Cubase.
Usually I hear only 2 sounds without changing options in Editor.
That’s not comfortable for me… Maybe I do something wrong, so, would you be pleased to help me?
I have M-Audiopile 2496 soundcard… Maybe I have to change some options in soundcard…
Step by step.
First of all I am interesting in busses. As I know they should signals from midi to audio.
But how to connect them with midi and etc?
Anyway, I always used only VST instruments and the hard synth is unknown thing for me.
Thank You. _________________ https://www.instagram.com/parkol_design/

I'm not completely sure I understand the question but here is what I do. I tend to record one track at a time, as a MIDI track first, and then record the corresponding audio track. I then mute the MIDI track and record the next MIDI track, followed by the audio track. I'm not doing an live multi-timbral stuff so this tends to work for me.
What you need to do is record the 4 MIDI tracks (I recommend 4 separate tracks), and then record the audio. I'm not sure if you are trying to record MIDI and audio at the same time, but I don't see any reason to do that. You could record four separate audio tracks but you would need four outputs on the synth and four inputs on the sound card. I think your soundcard may only have stereo inputs, so you could only record one stereo track at a time. If you need to record multiple tracks simultaneously, you'll need a mixer.
Audio from all of my audio sources (synths, Rhodes, drum machine, turntable, computer soundcard out, etc.) go into their own channels on a 24 channel mixer, and then the output of the mixer goes into an amp (for monitors), headphones, and into the stereo input on the soundcard (I think it's the same as yours). The mixer is an old Tascam 24-4-2 so I have some groups to play with.
MIDI from all synths goes into a MIDI patchbay, and then eventually out to the MIDI input on the soundcard. USB from the G2 goes to a USB port on the computer (I'm not using the USB on the Yamaha S90 right now).
Maybe if you explained your current MIDI and audio signal path, things might be more clear, or maybe I've completely missed the point and someone else will chime in with a more appropriate answer.
If you can wait a few days, I can verify my setup in my soundcard and Cubase and send you a more detailed explanation. I have a few gigs this week and some transcriptions to do so I'm busy for a couple of days.

First off, you will need a midi interface in your computer for applications to be able to send midi to the G2 (or any hard synth).
You need to connect the midi out connector from the computer, to the midi in connector on the G2.
To record audio from the G2 into Cubase, you need to connect 2 mono audio cables from the G2 audio out connectors, to the audio in connectors on your soundcard. _________________ Free Tibet. Release the Panchen Lama from prison. Let the Dalai Lama return to his home. |

First of all:
Thank You very much for your answers and help!!! Thank YOU!!!
Sorry for my English and I decided to make photos to explain better what I mean, because my English is not perfect…
So…
I have soundcard M-Audio 2496, mixer, midi keyboard, monitors and Nord for that.
I connected Nord audio outputs to mixer in.
Red square is audio cables between soundcard, mixer and monitors.
1. Nord (in)
www.ImageShack.us">
2 and 3 - Nord outputs that connceted to mixer inputs.
1 – midi cable connected to soundcard
And usb
www.ImageShack.us">
Soundcard.
1 – midi (it’s connected to Nord midi IN)
2,3,4,5 are for connecting between mixer and soundcard.
www.ImageShack.us">
Mixer (closer)
1 – it’s Nord MIDI connection and that white square is audio cables between soundcard and mixer that connected to monitors
www.ImageShack.us">
So Nord sounds but every time when I open any projec in Cubase, Nord preferences are like this, only 2 channels as you see.
www.ImageShack.us">
What do I need to do here?
To make few buses, mono or stereo and etc? How many?
www.ImageShack.us">
So, my midi keyboard conneceted to USB (PC), Nord connected to mixer (out) and soundcard, and mixer connected to monitors, soundcard and Nord.
www.ImageShack.us">
All I need is… When I open Cubase I need to work an ALL4 channels .
Also, when I play in project I need to record midi tracks to audio tracks to make new 4 tracks for writing.
And … does anyone have midi file for Cubase.
I installed new device but there are no patch names in Nord so it would be very good if someone have that file with names of patches for Cubase SX3.
Maybe I need to connect more cables or… I did something wrong…
Thank You. _________________ https://www.instagram.com/parkol_design/

Not so strange, you have the right cookie set in your browser so you are allowed to see them.
I don't know where you could send them ... you could attach them but they would not be in the text that way ... _________________ Jan

Seems like the performance you use has just two patches in it, i don't think this has anything to do with all the other things like cubase etc. _________________ Jan

I see the sound card is a 4 in/4 out. I think the mixer is stereo so you are pre mixing the 4 G2 outs to stereo, before the sound card. Once the slots are mixed together in the G2 or the mixer, they cannot be separated for post processing (changing level, adding eq/effects to individual parts).
You could go direct from G2 to soundcard inputs, but you would have to ensure that you had 4 mono patches which each used one of the 4 outs exclusively. |

Thank you very much.
So, what was your advice?
Do I need to replace cables from the mixer to the soundcard, but how will I listen the sound from monitors?
Or maybe I should buy better soundcard? Would you advice which would be the best for me?
With more inputs and outputs or optimal for Nord use with Cubase ans etc…
I’ll try to replace cables tonight. _________________ https://www.instagram.com/parkol_design/

Hi,
I had a similar problem a while back with using a Virus Ti, Cubase, a mixer and Audiophile 24/96 soundcard. I came to the conclusion that if I upgraded my soundcard to an Audiophile with the 10in 10out audio jacks (with all the fly cables hanging out) I essentially didn't need the hardware mixer as the synths (Ti, G2, whatever) were connected directly to the audio jacks on the soundcard and I use the mixer in Cubase to set the levels etc, and I use a MIDI sport 2x2 to deal with the MIDI. I found it easier to think of my new setup looking like a spider with Cubase being the body and central to the setup and my hardware making up the legs externally (I'm weird, I know). |

Oh, on the subject of busses, in the VST connections box that you have posted a picture of, add as many busses as you need and select the appropriate soundcard connection on the right hand-side of that page. Then if you go to an audio track you can select that new bus as it will appear. |
